California Catholic School Removes Statues of Jesus, Mary to Be More ‘Inclusive’

An independent K-12 Catholic school in the San Francisco Bay Area has removed religious statues from its campus in order to appeal to those of other faiths.

Parents and alumni are concerned about San Domenico School's decision to remove a number of statutes and religious icons, especially those of Jesus and Mary, the Marin Independent Journal reported.

"Articulating an inclusive foundation appears to mean letting go of San Domenico's 167-year tradition as a Dominican Catholic school and being both afraid and ashamed to celebrate one's heritage and beliefs," wrote parent Shannon Fitzpatrick in an email to school decision makers.

"In our time here, the word ‘Catholic' has been removed from the mission statement, sacraments were removed from the curriculum, the lower school curriculum was changed to world religions, the logo and colors were changed to be ‘less Catholic,' and the uniform was changed to be less Catholic," she continued.

The loss of tradition and ceremony is a leading reason why families—some of whom are not Catholic—have expressed concern about the change.

"The one main statue that has everyone fired up is the baby Jesus and Mary one," parent Kim Pipki told the Journal. Pipki said the school traditionally held a ceremony where the students would place a crown on Mary's head.

School supporters, however, say that the removal is reflective of the school's "inclusive" future.

Sister Maureen McInerney, prioress general of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, told the paper that she was OK with the decision. "San Domenico is a Catholic school; it also welcomes people of all faiths," McInerney said. "It is making an effort to be inclusive of all faiths."

Head of School Cecily Stock noted that while the local community knows San Domenico is Catholic, the school was making assertions that it was not run by the church or an order.

The Almighty is not stupid. He sees and knows everything. It is so disappointing these small folk aren’t smart enough to even realize this. Further confirmation they have no business running the schools.

That’s just stupid. Why would someone attend a Catholic school if they don’t believe in God, who is being offended? This is just epic level stupid.

The school is not Catholic unless the local ordinary says so.

Does anyone still have a doubt that the Catholic religion has abandoned God & the Bible? Only those who are not true believers would ever possibly do something like this.

Incluse is to include. To remove is to exclude.

Why would anyone pay these idiots for a diploma?

The hospital and doctors’ clinics I go to are owned and run by Franciscan Alliance. There are crucifixes all over, including in every examining room I have been in, as well as other Catholic religious art. A portrait of the Pope is prominently displayed in the main hallway, as is one of the local diocesan bishop. The papal flag flies outside the hospital, next to the American flag. While I was waiting for a colonoscopy last year, the chaplain read prayers at noon over the PA system. The chaplain came by, unrequested by us, when my son was waiting for a procedure. It was nice.

As far as I know, no non-Catholic doctor or patient has ever put enough pressure on Franciscan Alliance to make them take down the religious art and stop the prayers, probably because they understand the mission of Franciscan Alliance is rooted in the Catholic faith. Just as importantly, Franciscan Alliance understands and stands by that mission. I am not Catholic, and it’s all okay by me.

This school could learn something from the example of Franciscan Alliance.

Jesus teaches that if we confess Him before men, He will confess us before His Father in Heaven (Matthew 10:32). If we do not, He will not.

Don’t people still PAY tuition to attend Catholic School?

When that collection basket on Sunday starts receiving IOUs other than cash, with a note explaining why, I can see the Parish Priest having the statues back before the count is completed.

We used to ride the County School District bus to St Johns School in Goshen NY .. On the same street, the High School was on top, St Johns 1-12 was in the middle and the Elementary was on the bottom.

Some one from the town decided to ‘follow the law’ and kick us off the buses.

On Sunday, Father Jim stood up and said the School would be closed in 1 week and we all would have to plan for going to the Public School.

It was then learned that part of the Insurance for buses was being handled by the Church and when ‘they’ found that the 100 or so students in St Johns would be going local and the money cut off, someone with some sense said things were NOT going to change.

Over the many years I’ve been to San Francisco multiple occasions. I’ve always thought there is something in the water, or the air up there (I’m in SoCal.) that turns those people mental.

Beautiful country up there, but the people are of a different World. Not all, but enough to feel surrounded when there.
