Trump prepares to lift limits on military gear for police

The Trump administration is preparing to restore the flow of surplus military equipment to local law enforcement agencies under a program that had been sharply curtailed amid an outcry over police use of armored vehicles and other war-fighting gear to confront protesters.

Documents obtained by The Associated Press indicate President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order undoing an Obama administration directive that restricted police agencies’ access to the gear that includes grenade launchers, bullet-proof vests, riot shields, firearms and ammunition.

Trump’s order would fully restore the program under which “assets that would otherwise be scrapped can be repurposed to help state, local, and tribal law enforcement better protect public safety and reduce crime,” according to the documents. […]

The NAACP Legal Defense Fund said in a statement Sunday night that it is “exceptionally dangerous and irresponsible” for the administration to lift the ban.

“Just a few summers ago, our nation watched as Ferguson raised the specter of increased police militarization. The law enforcement response there and in too many places across the country demonstrated how perilous, especially for Black and Brown communities, a militarized police force can be,” the LDF said. …

“””The cops may not be used to put down the scum in the street but with these weapons they at least feel safe.”””

Do you not see the contradiction? It they’re not being used to stop the violence what do they not feel safe about?

This arming of cops like the military is BS.

Safe that if Antifa attacks them they won’t lose. Cops as a group are a cowardly bunch and will easily break and flee if attacked by better armed people. Giving them military weapons bolsters their resolve.

I guarantee that the cops will never use this stuff on the anarchists. Now, against a TEA party rally or first amendment rally? No guarantee.

Shadow Government . . .

Am I missing it . . . Where is Sessions? Why is Antifa allowed to terrorize and not be arrested?

Unless there is some action taken against Antifa, this looks like a set up for us to cheer a militarized police force.

Why? The police will just abandon it when faced with Antifa “protestors”.

The deep state preparing to put down American patriots when they rise against a tyrannical government?

Yeah i’m surprised so many conservatives on the board would be happy about this.

Don’t be. Every side has their zealots and knee-pad brigade, self-righteous in their own flavor of Fascism. They’ll also be the ones to ponder, “How did THIS happen?” *PFfftt*

History tells us this won’t be used against violent leftist groups as they protests are almost exclusively in liberal run cities.

Correct. Failing to learn from history...

Nothing about opening the same to the Citizen, the MASTER of govt.

As someone with a son going into law enforcement after college I’m very glad to see this.

Yeah, remember a few years ago when a bunch of us FReepers hated the idea of 0bama militarizing local police and County Sheriff’s departments enough that us making our concerns known to our rulers, got him to back off on it?

But now, since it is Trump doing it, it is all ‘hunky dory’.

As much as a lot of us might temporarily enjoy seeeing local police go after Antifa and the other leftist terrorist organizations with armored vehicles and machine guns, that schadenfreude wouldn’t last long, when we realize that the feds now ‘own’ our local law enforcement, and we are more likely going to be victims of a militarized police force than are our leftist enemies.

Well, then we KNOW for sure IT'S the RIGHT THING TO DO!

Thank you President Trump.

My thoughts exactly! LOL!!

They want to bring it; we'll bring it back in spades.

I see it also as a response to the fact that criminals have easier access to high powered weapons. In essence it becomes an “arms race”.

The Kabuki never stops. Police and military are not similar at all, except in totalitarian states. You idiots cheering this will be on the other side once the next Obama takes office.

Hardliners on the left and right are authoritarians wearing different colors. Either side will be just as happy to escort you to the gas chamber.

No we don’t. Police shouldn’t be armed with military hardware. They cannot be trusted.

Is that for real? Every time he “robs a store” ????? In what planet do these people live on?

Here’s a thought, mister. You’re concerned about getting shot by the police? Try not robbing stores. Go to school, get an education, and stop committing crimes. Your chances of being shot by “the popo” will be drastically reduced.

I’ve seen a lot of bravado here about patriots being armed, lock and load, boating accidents, try and take my guns, etc. Waco Texas, Ruby ridge, Twin Peaks, Bundy standoff have been trial runs, especially Twin Peaks motorcycle guys slaughter where the govt and local law enforcement took on a group of tough armed patriots and showed how easily they can be taken down. The govt, DHS, FBI, have made a point of demonizing “Home grown terrorists” Which are the “Bravado” guys bragging about having 1000 rounds of ammunition. Now the police are getting into the act. I have seen my local sheriff’s dept rappaling out of black helicopters...we are so screwed.
