Joe Arpaio may challenge Jeff Flake for Arizona Senate seat: Exclusive
Washington Examiner ^ | August 28, 2017 | Steven Nelson

Posted on 08/28/2017 9:31:36 AM PDT by monkapotamus

After receiving President Trump's first pardon, Joe Arpaio's plans have gone from possible prison to book-writing, speeches and potentially another run for office in Arizona, with Sen. Jeff Flake's seat one opportunity he is eyeing.

The former Maricopa County sheriff told the Washington Examiner he's upset at negative reaction to the Friday pardon, and that he feels Republican politicians are insufficiently supportive of the president, who he calls a great man.

"I could run for mayor, I could run for legislator, I could run for Senate," Arpaio said Monday. One particular race, however, is likely to gain significant attention: the GOP primary next year facing Flake, R-Ariz., a forceful Trump critic.

"I'm sure getting a lot of people around the state asking me" to challenge Flake, said Arpaio, who served 24 years as sheriff before losing reelection in 2016. "All I'm saying is the door is open and we'll see what happens. I've got support. I know what support I have..."

Arpaio, who is 85 years old, said people should not scoff at his potential candidacy.

"Why do you say ‘wow'?" he admonished, adding: "They just say Sheriff Joe Arpaio comma 85 years old. Why do they always say that?"

Arpaio said he believes "there is discrimination against senior citizens, big time" and that "I'm proud to be my age. I work 14 hours a day. If anyone thinks my age is going to hold me back, I've got news for them."

"The bottom line is there's no way I'm going to go fishing. I have no hobbies," he said, declining to say how likely he is to seek office.

Does that mean Jeff Flake will come in 4th or 5th in Republican Primary...

Age is relative. I have seen over 85 year olds completely devastate “kids” 20 years their junior.

I love this idea! I have to keep my brain calm, though.

Sheriff Joe is such a good and active man. He could do it easily.

We need Dr. Ward, NOW!

Besides McCain owns AZ and will probably be reelected in his next election.

I think it would be great for him to run and win. He should get sworn in, and then resign. It would be the biggest be-ouch slap to the dems ever. This of course is all dependent on how AZ handles resignations—it needs to be a guaranteed conservative replacement.

Arpaio landslide would be a big time middle finger to RINOs Flake and Traitor John, whom I pray for BTW - to curl up and die soon.

Not necessarily so. Kelli announced early on that she wanted McCain’s position when McCain could no longer work. She did not say it that way. In fact, I did not like her verbiage.

Dr. Kelli will get her senatorial seat. There is one more person I do like for Flake’s seat, but he has time to watch and learn.

I do believe Joe could win hands down. We just have to make sure there is absolutely no voter fraud, and that would not be difficult here.

I do not think McCain will be in any position to run for his Senate seat again, bless his heart.

IIRC, the Governor appoints a replacement of the same party (by law) as the previous occupant until there is a special election.

Ward has already declared for the seat Flake currently holds.

Dr. Kelli will get her senatorial seat. There is one more person I do like for Flake’s seat, but he has time to watch and learn.

She isn't a lock on anything. Trump met with Jeff DeWitt and Robert Graham last week when he was in Arizona, and both are interested being a senator. Ward will have to fight against several opponents, be it for Flake's seat or McCain's.

I do believe Joe could win hands down. We just have to make sure there is absolutely no voter fraud, and that would not be difficult here.

He couldn't even win his last race for reelection.

Please, just what ‘work’ do any of our so called ‘esteamed’ senators do in their big cushy chairs? Joe can out work ANY one of them. Like another has noted, he does have a wife who has/had cancer and if he pursues this would that endanger her in any fashion? His first thought should be for his wife, allowing others to fight the fight for America. Even enlisted men get leave now and then.

Sheriff Joe, any way you wish to go, American patriots are solid behind whatever decision you make.
Good luck, Sir.

I think his goal is to break the record of Strom Thurmond and Robt. Byrd. My bet is he would like to die in his chair on the senate floor.

DeWitt is the name I was trying to remember. And you are probably correct about Sheriff Joe. But what an image that brings to my wittle bwains. Just the thought of it...

Let me just have these lovely thoughts for an hour or so. Then I promise I will come around, okay?

normally I would like some one like joe but a senate term of 6 years is just to long at his age. he is 85 years old I would be more comfortable with him boing 2 years as a house member and if he is still in good shape doing 2 more yeaes

I am most definitely not God, but I don’t think he has a chance in sticking around.

My 51-year-old nephew has the same cancer as McCain. My nephew had two stints in Afghanistan and one in Feluja (sp?) while in the Marines. He was and is in perfect health other than a large tentacle tumor and two small ones. The two small ones will be easy to kill as a young healthy young man with the new treatments for that cancer. The larger mass is much more difficult. Glioblastoma may get a young very healthy man within three years.

Just sayin’with tears in my eyes.

Kelli Ward has the smarts too and is younger.

I don’t have a dog in that fight, but at 80 years old I would be careful. You already have one 80-something semi senile retard in the Senate from AZ. Why take the risk?
