Did you know who Ed Cunningham is? Probably not. Cunningham, a college football analyst for ESPN, was unknown to all but hardcore football fans. But by tying himself closely to a politically correct cause – in this case, resigning his position Wednesday, in a protest over concussions in football – he is guaranteed fawning media coverage. The New York Times is leading the Cunningham canonization.
With the new college football season for most teams starting this weekend, the resignation seems timed for maximum attention. But the politically correct movement seems much more focused on opposing what is uniquely American than where players actually face the greatest risks of concussion.
In college, women's soccer has a higher rate of concussions than men's football or soccer: 6.3 per 10,000 times women participate in soccer practice or a game versus 4.9 for men's soccer and 6.1 for men's football. Men's wrestling and hockey have even higher rates at 12.4 and 8.4 respectively.
But concussions aren't the only problem. In total injuries, men’s wrestling and hockey have even higher rates at 12.4 and 8.4 respectively.both men's and women's soccer exceed men's football. The total injury rate is 11.14 per 10,000 athletic exposures for men's soccer and 9.7 for women's soccer. For football, it is 9.5 per 10,000.
But concussions aren't the only problem. In total injuries, both men's and women's soccer exceed those of men's football. Total injuries for men's soccer are 11.14 per 10,000 practices or games and 9.7 for women's soccer. For football, the number is 9.5.
College sports are about twice as likely as high school sports to result in concussions. At the high school level, the numbers for soccer aren't quite as bad as for football. High school football is the riskiest. But girls' and boys' . . .

You are fooling yourself, if you think this is about football. Once the NFL is gone, it will be soccer next, or baseball, or rugby. The leftists are never satiated.... they just move on to the next battlefield and become victorious.. and march on and on and on.
My problem with the NFL is not the injuries. You know what you’re getting into when you sign up to play.

If women would go after girls softball or gymnastics the way they demonize football, they may have some credibility. As they do not, I don’t take hypocrites seriously.
I suppose they worry more about football because they are worried that these future female husbanks (ie womens’ personal atms) may damage their earning power.
This humbug started about ten years ago with a former NFL offensive lineman who was never hurt playing football. He suffered a neck injury in professional wrestling then went after pro football. Go figure.

I have to agree, and I used to love football. Instead of thanking God every day that they get to play a game and become very wealthy, too many players seem to have an attitude of entitlement.
I think it is the game that is the problem. A lot of todo about some yardage.

I suspect there are few concussions in rugby since you cannot spear, cannot tackle above the shoulders and you have to roll off the ball as soon as you are on the ground and you can only go into the pile from the 180 degrees on your side
Haven’t watch football in 2 years, College or Pro. Never felt better doing other stuff on Saturday and Sunday. Both support anti-conservative values, I hope they both die off.

Interesting point. He might be right. No mention of Hockey. Lol. Although a lot of Americans like Hockey, it is probably a sport that more Liberals and Canucks (redundant and double entendre, I know) like it so it doesn’t count.
I’ve seen the crippling effect of college football on a strong man in my family. No, it was not worth the years of suffering. Spine, knees, neck, ankles... Someone else can wreck their bodies for your “fun”, but it won’t be my family anymore.
