A bid by Tennessees governor to remove a bust of Confederate cavalry general, slave trader and early Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest from the state Capitol building was rejected Friday.
The State Capitol Commission voted 7-5 against issuing a petition to moving the bust from the Capitol to the new state museum being built nearby. It would have been the first step in a lengthy process laid out by Tennessees Heritage Protection Act that limits the removal or changing of historical memorials on public property.
Republican Gov. Bill Haslam called for the removal after last months deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. He had previously called for removing it after the 2015 slayings of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina.
Finance Commissioner Larry Martin sponsored the proposal to move the bust.

He's been Governor since 2011...why didn't he speak up then?
Typical p---y-whipped Republican
Typical left-wing Republican, holding down the fort for the Uniparty. Skousen’s communist goal list comes to life, so embodied in politicians like that.
The history of the Confederacy and the men that formed it are lost to the truth. By cherry picking historical statements one could say Lincoln was a racist also. The North is bathing in hypocrisy because the stain of slavery is much upon them as they benefited tremendously by the slave trade and shipping. The North desired the slave trade so much that they opposed Jefferson’s desire and the States of Virginia and NC to abolish slavery.
Both Governor Haslam and US Senator Little Bobby Corker spoke out in favor of removing the bust. Maybe this let these two RINOs know where they stand with the panel and the people of Tennessee.
Only Tennessee and Arizona had BOTH of their Senators vote for Rubio’s Gang Amnesty.
This is OUR HISTORY. There are things to admire and despise in persons and even technologies (such as submarines), from both sides.
Nathan was an incredible soldier for the South.
If Lincoln saw fit to shake hands and make up, why can't we?
New Jersey stayed a virtual slave state right up until the Civil War, too.
LOL
I went up to Nashville last week to a doctors appointment...
while I was there I went to the capital building g to see Polk, and Forrest etc expecting them to be gone soon...
“Republican.” That’s a despicable tag these days.
Meh. If that were true, how come we're only learning it now?
Thomas Jefferson had a lot of desires. Whether he really acted on them and how much -- that's another thing.
And we are trying really hard to remedy that. In the past, the conservatives have split the vote in the primary and allowed a RINO to get the nomination with about 35% of the vote.
Alexander got his long time friend and a doctor to run in his primary to split the vote..... we need to get both of the out but it will be a while for Alexander but Corker is up this time.
Why gee, it seems like he has little problem with it outside the highest pandering potential moments.
I want to elevate you to take positions in law offices, in stores, on farms, and wherever you are capable of going. I have not said anything about politics today. I dont propose to say anything about politics. You have a right to elect whom you please; vote for the man you think best, and I think, when that is done, you and I are freemen. Do as you consider right and honest in electing men for office. I did not come here to make you a long speech, although invited to do so by you. I am not much of a speaker, and my business prevented me from preparing myself. I came to meet you as friends, and welcome you to the white people. I want you to come nearer to us. When I can serve you I will do so. We have but one flag, one country; let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment.
Couldn’t we just develop a special “Moral Superiority” badge, certificate, or medal to give out to the self identified good and decent people who are bothered by the reality of history. We could make it real pretty and issue it in any color desired. We could even authorize them to have a ceremony and present it to themselves.
Glad to hear this.
Onward!
Haslam is a liberal just look at common core. He has done ZIP. What a disgrace.
Correction, it was Brownlow’s portrait, not statue, that the Confederates banished in 1987.
