One incredibly interesting aspect of the volcanic activity at Yellowstone is the fact that it is simply the latest of a very long history, believe it or not, actually originating in the state of Oregon 16.5 million years ago, as Yellowstone just happens to be the current location of a deep-seated ~stationary volcanic hot spot. Although the hot spot itself has remained relatively motionless over the past 16+ million years, the North American continent has been on the move.
