North Korea openly threatens EMP attack for the first time, changing the game

The news Sunday morning that North Korea had launched what appeared to be its sixth nuclear test and most powerful one to date is troubling enough.
But a statement from the rogue regime took things to a whole new level. The North said it had tested an H-bomb that was “a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack according to strategic goals.”
This is the first time it has publicly mentioned its interest and ability in an EMP attack, a devastating weapon that could have catastrophic consequences for North America, the West and their closer neighbours.
An EMP attack, as I detail in my new book Pulse Attack, is a nuclear detonation that occurs in the atmosphere and creates a waveform that can take down the electrical grid below.
In the worst case scenario, this wouldn’t just shut off the power for minutes or hours, but weeks or even months, due to serious damage to transformer stations and other integral elements of our power infrastructure.
This wouldn’t just mean we couldn’t turn on our laptops and televisions; it would shut down our telecommunications, transportation, water systems, our ability to get food to cities and much more.

No, but it would have done a pretty good job if it were detonated high above ground. Underground tests don’t generate an appreciable EMP pulse.
My bet is on former Soviet Union/Russian nuclear scientists contracting their skills out to the Nork's for money.
OTOH I've long believed that China is using the Nork's as a hedge against the U.S. in Asia -- a belief shared by many intelligence & State Department officials for a very long time.
Either way, time is short to act to take out Kimmie boy and eliminate this threat against the U.S. and our allies in the region. We'll have to deal with Russia and China once that's over too.

Exactly. Back then people knew how to survive without electricity. The estimates I have heard range up to 90% of the population perishing. I myself would likely not make it, as I am dependent upon medication, which would no longer be available.

Do a search for scientific studies on EMPs. You will not be nearly as worried.
It needs to be launched to a very high level. And it needs to be detonated at a very specific height.
The cone of EMP damage is fairly narrow. The horrifying effects would be in concentric circles. In the middle there would be total impact on electronics. But in the subsequent circles outside the max, your car would stop—but it would start back up.
Anyone trying to knock out a city could probably do that. But knocking out a continent would require about a dozen precisely placed nukes.
The bigger concern is that someone is shooting off nukes.

There is no clean way to attack NK without giving them the opportunity to get at least one salvo into the south.

Fiberoptic cable itself is not vulnerable to EMP's.
My question is, "What can be done to protect my personal items that use computer chips?" I understand a Faraday cage will work. How does one make one and what else can be used and how should it be assembled?

Fortunately, it looks like Irma is going to miss the Gulf.

Dear Lord, I take that back. I just looked at the latest computer models and and FL is dead in Irma’s sights.

The first time I have heard that. Very interesting.
And almost obvious if you think in terms of an electromagnetic wave. Based on your description it must be the case that the EMP wave propagates to earth but is absorbered/dissipated/scattered at that point leaving the damage in concentric (and diminishing with distance) rings.
