North Korea openly threatens EMP attack for the first time, changing the game

The news Sunday morning that North Korea had launched what appeared to be its sixth nuclear test and most powerful one to date is troubling enough.
But a statement from the rogue regime took things to a whole new level. The North said it had tested an H-bomb that was “a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated at high altitudes for super-powerful EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack according to strategic goals.”
This is the first time it has publicly mentioned its interest and ability in an EMP attack, a devastating weapon that could have catastrophic consequences for North America, the West and their closer neighbours.
An EMP attack, as I detail in my new book Pulse Attack, is a nuclear detonation that occurs in the atmosphere and creates a waveform that can take down the electrical grid below.
In the worst case scenario, this wouldn’t just shut off the power for minutes or hours, but weeks or even months, due to serious damage to transformer stations and other integral elements of our power infrastructure.
This wouldn’t just mean we couldn’t turn on our laptops and televisions; it would shut down our telecommunications, transportation, water systems, our ability to get food to cities and much more.

The model has changed since yesterday. There seems to be a chance that it could move south of Florida and into the gulf, but I’m no expert. We have relatives and friends in Texas who are busy ripping out carpeting and dry wall. We also have relatives and friends in Florida and relatives in Georgia. A Cat 4 hurricane is a daunting force of nature.

The size of the explosion has very little to do with the EMP effects. EMB is caused by gamma rays. Gamma rays are produced much more efficiently by atomic, i.e. fission, weapons. Further, the altitude at which such an explosion occurs is of prime importance. That part you understand quite well.
A “nuclear” bomb is commonly understood to be a hydrogen, ie fusion, weapon - though sometimes that distinction is lost on people. I have found that it is easier to compare them using similar terms. For example, either refer to them as atomic or hydrogen bombs, or refer to them as fission or fusion weapons. That way there is no confusion at all as to what you are speaking of.
Regarding microwave ovens, you have to be very careful about openings to the rest of the world. I speak specifically of where the plug enters the oven. If that is not covered up with some kind of a screen that will also filter out the EMP waves, then you have an incomplete Faraday cage, meaning that you have something that simply will not work.
The large nuclear bomb they just blew up was about 1.6 Megaton, most certainly an enhanced two-stage bomb (a hydrogen bomb, though probably not “portable” but built and assembled in the dug-out tunnel they bored underground.
Because it was an underground nuclear blast, there was no above-ground pulse released high above ground that creates the EMP damage we discussing.
But, because it was a successful “test” of a hydrogen bomb, it brings North Korea much, much closer to being able to build a bomb that CAN be lifted into the atmosphere to create a wide-area EMP pulse that CAN damage many electronics.
Laz, EMP mandates a serious discussion. Not mad laughter like Slim Pickens riding the A-bomb to his death.

What most people fail to remember is that most of our electrical power transformers are no longer manufactured in quantity in this country.
The electrical power grid transformers are the most susceptible equipment subject to damage from an EMP ( either natural or nuclear).
Our own domestic production of electrical transformers is woefully inadequate to our needs.
ONLY seven percent (7%) are manufactured domestically :

Most of our electrical transformers are manufactured in China (the industry exported to China years ago due to lower manufacturing and fabrication expenses).
Even then, most transformers are pre-ordered prior to 'need', and they are already on "back order" lists.
And now, consider which country props up the Norks economically, food supplies, transportation, and fuel (oil and coal).
When Washington talks about imposing a duty tax on all Chinese goods due to a trade debt/imbalance, how do you think China will respond ?
Unfortunately, we are more dependent on China to maintain our electrical supply than we should be.
This is part of the national conundrum regarding North Korea.

We will not go down alone. We know full well you helped Little Phattie get to this point. I read a story that contended the security they have would abandon them or in some cases, kill them, and they are really going to have to fend for themselves.
