The east coast better hope Irma doesn’t drown them in 50” of rain. Wonder how long this writer can tread water…..

If this hyphenated creature were up to his ass in alligators - literally - and only minutes from certain drowning, I doubt if he’d turn away help from one of the Cajun Navy heroes. Maybe he’d say, “You can move on. I’m waiting for the government boat.”

I wouldn’t be too sure of that. Recall the recent tale of the Broadway show that closed early: they preferred to see the main actor (black) and everybody else involved put out of work rather than have him suffer the indignity of being replaced by Broadway favorite Mandy Patankin (white) to improve ticket sales.

Ideology Uber Alles might not have limits.

Right, we should waste billions of taxpayer dollars to have a fleet of boats mothballed 10 months out of the year and pay crewmen to be on standby for when we need them, rather than let the guys who already have boats volunteer when needed for free.

Actually, Americans should know that double-barrelled names are used in Great Britain when two powerful families come together. Think Spencer-Churchills. Of course, in GB, it is also considered pretentious to do so. Hyphenating two ethnic names in a ridiculous jumble of Italian/Hispanic, English/Jewish is idiotic.

The subtext is that there's something disturbing about people losing faith in government and expecting help from ordinary working-class volunteers.

That implied condemnation of the Cajun Navy is certainly something you can criticize. Alexis de Tocqueville, the great interpreter of America, certainly would.

But the text counts, too, as well as the subtext. It's possible to take the barely hidden or underlying meaning for the whole article and ignore what's on the surface, which may not be as pointedly partisan as that.

What really offends him is the self-motivation of some Americans to help themselves and each other. He believes EVERYONE should be dependent on the government in all situations. Self-help and independence disturb those who prefer helpless sheep.

I’d call that more winning. Many drowned liberal elites who choose to down in order to adhere to their perverted principles.

This is what is wrong with this country. This country was built by people that had to rely on themselves, their family, and their neighbors to survive and settle this country. Americans not only did not depend on the government to save them, they did not think it was government’s responsibility to save them from everything that could possibly happen to them. People only expected a few things from the government at that time, they felt they were responsible for themselves, their family, and their community. It wasn’t realistic for people to wait for the government to help in a crisis, guess what it still isn’t.

It is fantastic that we have a government to help with this type of disaster, but no way they can help as fast as someone that is already there on the scene, or even people like the Cajun Navy that will drop everything and just go help. No red tape, no large scale organization, just help. I don’t hear anyone saying those that survived Harvey don’t need any help from the government. Help from the government takes nothing away from the Cajun Navy being there to save people.

The stretch to tie this to the refusal to recognize global warming is amazing. As if there were no hurricanes or other natural disasters before people began to drive SUVs.

I am so happy this man is not my neighbor, I am sure if anyone reached out to him for help in a time of need he would tell them the government would be there soon.

They can’t be free of men’s name domination until they invent their own surnames and their daughters then take the Moms’ invented names.

They could just add prefixes like "La" and "De" or suffixes like "qua" to their existing names! It would be so cool.

It’s already happened one time in Minnecraponus. In 2010 a tornado went through the city, causing quite a bit of damage. One tree surgeon from Hastings was cutting down fallen trees blocking roads and driveways in the Northeast neighborhood. Didn’t charge anyone anything. The Minneapolis police arrested him, claiming that he was a predator taking advantage of people, and that it was the city government’s job to clear the trees.

Once upon a time, back when we were free, there was no big gummint to provide for our every little need. We had to provide for ourselves, and look out for our family, friends and neighbors. (Yes, that includes police work.)

This is actually rather refreshing, watching Americans being Americans.

How long before some democrat proposes a law banning any non-government group from providing disaster assistance?

They won't do it by law, at first. They'll wait until some civilian rescue goes wrong in a public way. It's bound to happen that when these big flotillas of people go out to help, some very very small percentage of them will be glory-seekers, idiots or worse.

Eventually, there will be an accident or a scandal caught live on-air, something the mainstream media can exploit. There will be lots of microphones shoved into lots of government officials' faces asking why they let such a tragedy happen.

The failed rescuer will be arrested, his name dragged through the mud. Then there will be a lawsuit, and they'll drag in the homeowners, boat and car insurance of the failed rescuer. The failed rescuer will get hit with some massive judgment with multi-million dollar liability. Maybe the judgment will be overturned on appeal, but all people will remember is the millions of dollars. Then the insurance companies will start making it clear that getting involved in any of these activities voids your policies.

The government will start issuing warnings and advisories to "protect" people from civilian rescuers, etc. National guard will start deploying to stop civilian rescuers for their own "safety" and to stop them from "interfering" with "legitimate" rescue efforts, etc.

Like most things, it will be a huge, unnecessary government response to a problem that only arises 0.01% of the time in an otherwise very important and very necessary thing, but the government will ultimately use it to facilitate their own purposes, requesting additional funds and resources, increasing their authority, etc.

In Florida it’s called “ Trolling for Gators”.
Same probably in Louisiana. Only with a Cajun accent!

I’d really like to tell this hyphenated shitlib from first hand experience - I and every other Coast Guardsman I know sure wish we had the Cajun Navy participating in the Cuban Boatlift in 1980. We would’ve been done in a 3rd of the time it took, even with Jimmah Carter nursing his thumb with his ass for 12 months.
