Leftism. Women hyphenate their names to show that they are not junior partners in marriage and that they do not accept a man’s name. It never seems to occur to them that the hyphenation combines two men’s names. They can’t be free of men’s name domination until they invent their own surnames and their daughters then take the Moms’ invented names.
I would add “pretension” to the earlier mention of militant feminism.
I’m still waiting to see what happens to names when two hypenated-Americans decide to marry. Maybe that’s a practical impossibility, marriage being in their eyes too enforcing of traditional gender roles / patriarchy / traditional values / etc.
