I know a man from Canada with a green card who has been here for 40 years...he promised his mother he would not become an American citizen during her life time...I suspect her ancestors were Loyalists...:)
I also have a friend from Scotland with a green card who has worked hard for decades to get Republicans elected though she cant vote herself...shes as patriotic about America as you can get...her husband served in Nam...her son in Iraq...the whole family are as red white and blue as you want for neighbors...
my own decision to go ahead and become and American citizen came from my passport renewal date fast approaching...it was get my passport renewed in time or apply for citizenship which I already qualified for...
a few weeks before the passport date, I was naturalized...

My wife is here on greed card. So long as Congress doesn’t say “eh, she’s been here long enough, have a US passport”, don’t go giving citizenship to illegal immigrants.
