North Korea for the first time this week revealed plans for using its nuclear arms for space-based electronics-disrupting EMP attacks, in addition to direct warhead ground blasts.
The official communist party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published a report Monday on "the EMP might of nuclear weapons," outlining an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack produced by detonating a nuclear warhead in space.
"In general, the strong electromagnetic pulse generated from nuclear bomb explosions between 30 kilometers and 100 kilometers [18.6 miles and 62 miles] above the ground can severely impair electronic devices, electric machines, and electromagnetic grids, or destroy electric cables and safety devices," said the article authored by Kim Songwon, dean of Kim Chaek University of Technology in Pyongyang.
"The discovery of the electromagnetic pulse as a source of high yield in the high-altitude nuclear explosion test process has given it recognition as an important strike method," he stated.

Yes, with the caveat that there are certain areas within the affected area which receive more or less than you would expect. For example, an area north of detonation will see almost no effect and a horseshoe-shaped area south of detonation will see the greatest effect. It has to do with interaction with the earth’s magnetism.

I asked you to watch the video and comment**...Why do folks comment on things they don’t read/watch**... You didn’t have to watch the video, but seriously, I don’t appreciate attempt to discredit the PHD ELECTRICAL ENGINEER and certified EMC/EMI who works for NASA and/or make me look foolish.
Had you watched the video you would know it was clear Dr. Bradley was talking about the US, the lower 48. Also, he does not agree with all of the fiction hype, which you would know if you had watched even 5 minutes**

Sorry, I don’t think he was trying to scare anyone...actually, he was rather calm. He has expertise, is he supposed to give it away? Do you? So what if he sells stuff? He stated in the video that he has free videos too. If he has expertise, then why shouldn’t he sell stuff...So what if his YouTube is “disasterpreparer.com?” I said “he is educated, calm and PREPARED.” He practices what he preaches...I wish my neighbors were more prepared!
There are a number of other experts who have concerns about an EMP—though not specifically originating in North Korea. Dr. Pry for one. I hope they are not correct, but they have been saying we need to harden the civilian grid, etc. for years...Are they trying to scare us too???
BTW, I have not bought any of Bradley’s materials—don’t know what they are, I just found his interview interesting and informative and thought others might.
Frankly, in the times in which we live, think it is good to be prepared for whatever events you feel might come your way. My son lives in near the Hayward Fault...You better believe he is Earthquake prepared even though he has not had to activate his preparation.
BTW, IMHO that preparation is spiritual, mental, and physical.

If Kim detonated an EMP or several over the US would we retaliate with nukes? I’ll bet not.
Nukes would affect S Korea also, something we would be very reluctant to do.

Yeah but the difference between 1960’s level of dependency upon electronics and today is astronomical. Those same tests today would yield a vastly different outcome.

The latter, in the case of a detonation 100km from the surface. It’s simply a function of line of sight to the ground.
Now, what the effects in that area is the question, and both Hawaii and Kakhakstan were in the range of the 1960s tests and there were no severe power station failures there.

You mention transformers as a major economic/civilization failure point, and I agree with you, however they are massively hardened against lightning strikes, overload and other transients. Electronics and data nodes will be hit hard.
Helps a lot to have a simple mind, I guess. Kind of reminds me of Alfred E. Newman in the old Mad magazine: “What, me worry?”
