How Democrats Lost Their Way on Immigration
The Atlantic ^ | July/August 2017 | Peter Beinart

The myth, which liberals like myself find tempting, is that only the right has changed. In June 2015, we tell ourselves, Donald Trump rode down his golden escalator and pretty soon nativism, long a feature of conservative politics, had engulfed it. But that’s not the full story. If the right has grown more nationalistic, the left has grown less so. A decade ago, liberals publicly questioned immigration in ways that would shock many progressives today.

In 2005, a left-leaning blogger wrote, “Illegal immigration wreaks havoc economically, socially, and culturally; makes a mockery of the rule of law; and is disgraceful just on basic fairness grounds alone.” In 2006, a liberal columnist wrote that “immigration reduces the wages of domestic workers who compete with immigrants” and that “the fiscal burden of low-wage immigrants is also pretty clear.” His conclusion: “We’ll need to reduce the inflow of low-skill immigrants.” That same year, a Democratic senator wrote, “When I see Mexican flags waved at proimmigration demonstrations, I sometimes feel a flush of patriotic resentment. When I’m forced to use a translator to communicate with the guy fixing my car, I feel a certain frustration.”

The blogger was Glenn Greenwald. The columnist was Paul Krugman. The senator was Barack Obama.

The author has evidently been in a coma since the Johnson administration.

It is an interesting read, I plan to spend some more time with it, I see a lot of information here to counter this liberal/illegal love fest.

There’s more - the Democrats were DEAD-SET against Illegal Immigration right through the Clinton Administration. This was due to the union influence and the way Illegals were being used by business to weaken unions.

But after Bush Junior opened the floodgates, the Democrats then did the math and figured out that they could turn this country into a one-party state if those Illegals could become voters - so the got the unions on board and the rest is history.

To put it another way - not only did Bush Jr. totally screw up the Republicans on Illegal immigration, he was also responsible for turning the Democrats against the country on the issue.

Good point.

What changed here was that somewhere around the mid-2000s, Hispanics surpassed blacks as the largest minority group in the U.S. That's when the Democrats made the calculated decision to toss their black supporters into the ash heap.

The dirty little secret is that THIS is probably a very big reason why a group like "Black Lives Matter" appeared out of nowhere in Barack Obama's second term. A lot of black Democrats knew they'd been sold out by their own party.

They didn’t lose their way. They need poor, uneducated, unskilled people to keep power and they looked across the border and saw millions of potential voters and invited them in.

Sorry, but I don’t agree with most of that.

From what I’ve seen, the Dems don’t treat blacks any differently than before - they’ve always treated them like crap (think education, inner city crime, etc.). They figure they can take blacks for granted because blacks are reminded of their minority (and victim) status every time they look in the mirror - for most of them at least. Fighting immigration was to protect their unions, not blacks directly.

In this case, I think they’re trying to also pick up the Hispanics to add to their coalition. The problems begin when they are so minority-heavy, that the minorities start dictating policy, and that policy is almost always rabidly anti-white - so the whites start to bolt to the Republicans, as in the last election.

As far as BLM goes...that’s nothing new either. And, as Rush noted, it is just a voter registration and motivation drive. Having blacks on board doesn’t do the Dems any good if they don’t turn out in big numbers - so you tell them that whitey’s out to get them, and/or kill them - and then they go vote to stop whitey. The reason I say it’s not new is because Jimmy Carter promised that Reagan would enslave blacks, and the Dems essentially said that if Bush Jr. were elected in 2000, the KKK would be reborn (specifically that was their James Byrd advertisement). So nothing new...they badly need black turnout...and they do what they need to, to get that turn out.

You use the phrase: "somewhere around the mid-2000s". The author uses the years 2005 and 2006.

Everyone should remember that in 2005 and 2006 the GOP and Dems were converging on a compromise immigration reform bill that would ultimatelye called Hegel-Martinez which would receive 64 cloture votes in the senate. Included were amnesty to citizenship for some illegals, and some would get amnesty to guest worker and some would be deported. They would spend money on new fencing. Guestworker programs were reformed and expanded and a new guest worker program was created, which would end the need for illegals in the future. That was part of the compromise, the dems would have to get tuff on illegals and the GOP agreed to amnesty.

But, the GOP chickened out. They Correctly recognized that were going to lose the House and Senate in the 2006 election so they decided to kill mmigration reform bill in the House, and run a hard anti immigrant campaign, that didn't help.

The author is not factoring that 2006 bill in his article and he is not factoring in the immigration bill that Senate passed in 2013

The Dims realized, probably during Slick’s eight years, that massive legal and illegal immigration from Third World nations was the only thing that kept them competitive in national elections. Many old video clips have been shown recently of Slick, Schumer and others decrying the negatives of illegal immigration, but no more. Immigration is the only thing that keeps them viable and they know it.

Too bad so many Republican ignore that and do the bidding of their major corporate donors.

The truth is both parties invited them in.
Bush senior did not implement all of the enforcement in the 1986 immigration act. Clinton did a better job of enforcement than either Bush.
Obama just stopped enforcement altogether and even had them escorting illegal alien children around the country to reunite them with their illegal alien parents.

We elected Trump to reverse the illegal alien inundation that both parties have foisted on the citizens.
I hope he sticks with the citizens and the rule of law.

As the black population starts to drift away from the Left, they realized that they need to backfill those vacancies, with people that are more gullible. Especially ones that don’t even speak the language.

It’s all about the votes.

...except there’s not too much drifting going on with blacks. Maybe a bit, but nothing close to a trend.

What is happening, however, is that the FDR/JFK Democrats are fading out. They are/were the only significant class of white voters who were 100% loyal to the Democrats - they still watch network news, they think Trump is a jerk, and even though they live by high moral standards, they simply have NO IDEA as to how far Left the Democrats have moved (or simply ignore it)...and are, instead, convinced the Republicans have gone hard-right (even though we all know that, if anything, the Republicans have been moving Left since Reagan).

This is the huge demographic that the Dems are losing, and the people who should replace them simply don’t have the same blind-loyalty to the Democrats, as shown last year when Trump won working class whites in huge numbers.

Interesting take.

It’s interesting, I went back and forth with a Lib the other day. He told me that pretty soon, the President was going to have ICE agents pulling kids out of classrooms. Amazes me how radical and bizarre the “New Left” thinks and how apocalyptic they seem to think, all things Republican are.

Yea, I see it in my family. They lived a perfect conservative lifestyle, something many of our parents did. And throughout that time they supported the party that both supported their lifestyle and also represented them (or at least made some effort to), which was the Democrats...until the past 20 years or so.

So now I tell them all of the horrific things that today’s Democrats have become...and they basically shrug it off, because, in their brainwashed opinion, the Republicans have become much worse.

It all started making sense to me in 2004, when Dan Rather was laughed off the planet for continuing to believe that the fake Bush draft-dodging document was real. We all thought what he was doing was silly.

But it wasn’t silly, not at all. He had MILLIONS OF JFK/FDR Democrats riding on his words (they loved him just as much as JFK/FDR), and if he were to admit the document was fake, their world would come crashing down, which definitely would have affected the election. So he stuck with his fake story and the older people, who trusted him more than they trusted their own kids (or own eyes), stayed convinced that Bush was a draft dodger, stayed with the Democrats, and still came out to vote...and nearly gave the election to Kerry.
