This is interesting:

Just entered a fake last name (Smith) and some random 6 digits, and apparently “Based on the information provided, we believe that your personal information may have been impacted by this incident. “

Lets see... I provide my last name and 6 of 9 digits to my SSAN. Another 1000 guesses at most and bingo... I have a match.

The first three digits of your ssn are coded to the geographic location where the card was issued so not exactly random.

Equifax is already getting hit with lawsuits.

Not only did these guys cash out before bad news..they delayed the bad news thus creating more harm.

I already had a credit freeze on my accounts. It’s easy to do. Then when you need credit you temporarily lift it.

I checked other sources and I believe the link is legit. I signed up : name and last 6 of SSN. Site tells you if you were impacted, or not impacted.

Yes. Went strait to Equifax. Clicked on the banner and it takes you to one of their sites. It is legit and there is no mention of money yet. I was affected, however my wife was not. I'm very angry at the moment.

Has anyone posted the names of the Equifax empoloyees that sold off their stock?

My info was hacked during the OPM data losses, and I think a couple of other times. I did not sign up for OPM’s monitoring offer as the contract was awarded without competition and I think the second hack was awarded to a different company. My problem is that with every hack event the protection offered makes it necessary to give that company the keys to my information. So these protection companies are prime targets to hackers. I think that the initial loser of a person’s data should be required to monitor that person’s data for life, though in the case of OPM’s low bidder that was a croney of the Obamas that is probably not a good thing either. Maybe the initial company/govt agency that loses a person’s data should be required to pay a person a high scale fee so that an individual can chose their own monitoring/credit protection company, for life (the fee would increase in the future too). I would hope to stay with one company and not spread my info to numerous credit monitoring companies. (Hope this makes sense-dealing with bad cold!)

They had time to roll out this bad news..and they have botched it.

Just assume you have been compromised and take appropriate action.

Credit freeze is best option. The lenders you have debt with will still be able to access your information but should deter any new credit in your name. Probably not fool proof

Discover has a service that alerts you to use of your SS if you have a card with them. Something about searching the net for your number. Not sure how it works.

Other posters need to understand, all your personal information is held by at least three credit monitoring agencies. It doesn't matter if you sign up or not.

If you have a drivers license, bank, credit card, loan and/or investment accounts, they have all your info. If you have ever taken out a mortgage, they have your info. You don't have to give the information to them. Those that you do business with do and now they do it in real time.

The IRS is another wonderful mess. In the past I had additional SS payments during a two year period. They would not explain it or correct it. Local tax agencies have that information when they reconcile accounts for audits. It is really fun to be forced into a situation where you have to prove a negative.

This is one big hot mess.
