how do we know this is a true site?

I wouldn’t do anything until I knew that this was real.

It isn’t even Equifax.com

You can visit the Equifax homepage directly and there’s a blurb at the top of the page that’ll lead you to the check/impact site. The blurb is new as I checked last night for a statement from the company...and there wasn’t one yet.

Go to equifax.com - they have a banner acknowledging the issue and a link from there leading to the same place. Appears legit.

I went to Equifax.com and verified they have that website linked on their own page so I doubt it is fake. They also said:

Company to Offer Free Identity Theft Protection and Credit File Monitoring to All U.S. Consumers"
