The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands has ordered its national guard to seize guns, ammunition and other weapons from its citizens as the territory prepares for Hurricane Irma to make landfall.
Gov. Kenneth Mapp, an Independent, signed an executive order Tuesday instructing Adjutant General Deborah Howell to take whatever actions she considers necessary to maintain public order, The Times-Picayune reported.
The order, obtained by The Daily Caller, states that Howell is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission.

“Sorry officer lost mine in a hurricane accident.”
Completely unconstitutional.
But then again, so was our last President.
Our local talk radio host who is “gun-ho” said that the National Guard in the Virgin Islands is unarmed and may need the weapons. Constitutionally that still probably doesn’t justify doing it.
I hope these Island dopes do get their butts sued and an example is made. I am to assume they have to abide to the same Constitution as American mainlanders. I remember Sandy where government local to federal was nowhere to be seen or functioning in any productive fashion for a long period of time. After natural disasters or any other SHTF,it’s survival of the fittest and ARMED.
So why are they not armed to begin with? Do they think that Cuba will take this chance to invade? /sarc
The governor repeated assures this order was to allow national guard to purchase what they need and NOT to seize weapons from anyone. Now that the hurricane has past, is this true? Any reports whatsoever to suggest arms and ammo were seized from any private citizen? And the order said explosives, too. Who personally has explosives?
That doesn’t sound right. My youngest son applied for the Coast Guard, and one of the questions on the application was if you were comfortable with carrying a side arm, because that was a requirement for most jobs.
Says they "may need" it which implies that they don't have any.
But it's to seize everything, things it doesn't sound like they really need like explosives unless it's to clear rubble or something. They should have access to another source for that kind of thing one would think.
He can order confiscation. He can’t implement it. All his order does is reveal what an idiot he is.
Hum, yuh, yeah. I will step right up. Sure, I have explosives here. Are you kidding me?
The correct answer to “May we have your firearms?” No but I AM part of the militia and when the governor directs the need for it I will be there, thank you.
The 2a is a privilege doled out at the pleasure of the ruling class. /s
Regardless of what the Constitution protects us from, I remember the forceful search and confiscation from a lady in NO during Katrina and probably others. There was some indignation by members of the public but I don't remember anything ever came of it.
There is usually a lot of bluster but nothing ever seems to be done about any infringements of rights, except minorities (if justified I'm for it, of course) probably because realistically nothing much can be done against a powerful government and inability to organize like in the past because they've got eyes, ears and infiltration everywhere seems like.
Test case for the mainland.
“Who personally has explosives?”
Surely you jest.....
