Enrollment Drop Creates Financial Shortfall [Oberlin College]
Oberline Review ^ | September 8, 2017 | Sydney Allen and Alexis Dill

Oberlin College is looking at a $5 million deficit heading into the 2017–18 academic year due to an unexpected drop in admissions. This not only strains budgets for the upcoming fiscal year, but also points toward a much larger budgetary issue that has been brewing under the surface for years. Newly-elected Chair of the Board of Trustees Chris Canavan, OC ’84, announced the news in an email to faculty and staff June 14. The email, leaked to the Review by anonymous sources, was sent just a few weeks before Canavan officially took office, replacing six-year board member Clyde McGregor, OC ’74.

Is it the Trump effect or are people getting wise on their own? University of Missouri & Duke backlash?

4+ years of college takes away 10% of your working years. They may not be PRIME money making years but think of compound interest over 40+ years until age 59 and a half-Roth IRA. No taxes on winnings! I say join the military for 4 years, put your FIRST $6k in the Roth and get out at age 22. The will be ‘trained’ by then.

Colleges are dying for the same reason the NFL is dying and nobody seems to know why.

Fire all the silly liberal studies profs and cut the silly fluff required courses for graduation. That would cut a student’s time by an entire semester. That should go a long way in winning back parents’ wallets.

I've been wondering about this. We have a high school senior doing all the college stuff and I have noticed the more liberal colleges are sending multiple mailers. One even sent a hand written postcard/letter from a student.

A waft of desperation I thought I smelled.

By the way guys most colleges are 60% women 40% guys. I sometime think it'd be fun but then I remember I hate school.

And if you're a white guy, imagine going to one of these universities so you can learn to hate yourselves. Its sick.

The good news is this;however, most of the millenials on campus aren't buying this crap. A military officer I know is back at university on our dime again and he has been reporting back to me the general zeitgeist of these students.

They want jobs and this social justice stuff many see as baloney. Right when many of them are really starting to pay attention - they are learning the left is loony the republicans are as crooked as the Democrats and president Trump is trying to make it so I can have a job.

Liberals and leftists that think they have the millennials locked up are in for a another huge shock come 2018 so are the incumbent RINOs

There is now a third party, an American First party, and its head is the president of the United States. Lets not quibble that the 3rd party is hosting itself via a hostile take over bid in the republican party. Mentally lots of us are off the 2 party reservation - we haven't left what conservatism ment to Ronald Regan but the realignment is largely complete. Incumbent republicans are now getting looked at like Democrats by the voters. The president is bringing heat to Senate primaries in his supposed own party.

This is historical stuff and so overdue. I love it that most of the country now sees Senators as pariahs and phonie - we need to drill this into to the Senators heads.

Just how little they are known outside their state, how they are held in contempt, how they are viewed as incompetent stoolies for their PAC/lobbyist/donors, and how stupid we believe them to be.

The more we poke their vanity the more stupid they will act. Its game time Flake, Heller Corker et all get the hook and we replace them with people who will support the American First agenda - president Trump.

“Because of the deficit, the board chose to hold all non-union salaries at their previous level unless otherwise stipulated by a contract, including faculty member salaries, for the second year in a row.
“It’s something that we never want to do,” Dean of the College of Arts and Science Tim Elgren said about the salary freeze. “When we look at a short-term expense issue, there’s almost no way to recover, because we’re fixed in contracts with the unions, and with non-union continuing faculty members and visitors. Holding salaries at zero for a year, which is what happened this last year, is a dramatic step. But it’s the one thing that we can do immediately to have an impact on the budget without people losing their jobs. We hope to not have to go back to that.”

Music to my ears!

Drop in enrollment needs to happen at every college since all those “dens of demons” do is corrupt the young, impressionable, gullible youth.

We have a grandson, who is a junior in highschool. He is already over 6' tall, a jock with a tall jock build to go with blonde hair and hazel blue eyes. We can only imagine if he went to one of these hate white men schools.

Most especially state-run colleges and universities, because they are using taxpayer dollars to run subversion operations against our country. Just received a “dun notice” from the Chancellor of UC Berkeley (I am a BSME ‘65) which went from our mailbox the recycle bin. I have repeatedly asked the “alumni association” to quit sending this stuff telling them that I rue the day I ever attended Cal.

You posted on another thread: 4+ years of college takes away 10% of your working years. You and I are in the same group re most college degrees now. Besides most degrees being worthless. They take away 5 years of ones life and place most in deep debt.

See the description of my grandson. Besides being a great looking California guy, he is excellent in math and science.

He makes A’s in his STEM classes and barely gets B’s in his non STEM classes. He was in the Math Olympics during his middle school years. However, those b’s will keep him out of any UC college.

He speaks/reads Spanish about as good as his Hispanic friends.

It is scary what he can do with Ipads, smart phones, his mac pc and my Chromebook.

I have suggested that he consider the military and the Navy’s
Cyber Command.

http://www.public.navy.mil/fcc-c10f/Pages/home.aspx

As you noted, his military training for 4 years would be excellent for a lot of jobs in the next several decades. He would be debt free as well as his parents with an incredible real world education.

I’d agree that most colleges aren’t feeling much, as there seems to be a steady supply of naive kids to feed them...but on the edges, people on our side are starting to question things - such as why they should send their kid to a school that costs over $200k, when they’ll only make $50k when they leave...whereas if they send their kid to another (i.e., state) school as a commuter, major in the right field (computer science), they can pay $50k over 4 years and make $200k pretty shortly after college (assuming they work in Silicone Valley). Plus, being a commuter likely insulates them from 75% of the crap that resident students have to now put up with.

As to the NFL...they’re getting walloped...but since they don’t intend to take on these agitators, they’re keeping quiet and hoping it all dies down. Of course it won’t.

The starting salary for a Bachelor if Science ( not Arts ) degree in engineering from a top 50/25 ranked Engineering school is greater that 70,000 dollars per year.

The investment more than pays for itself if you can get accepted and graduate even if you have to go too and pay out of state tuition.

A welder or machinist begins at 15.00- 25.00 per hour immediately on leaving a 6 month program, or a tech high school or apprenticeship. Salaries go up towards 45.00 per hour. The tech student will continue to work through those 5 years of college earning income, and people are BEGGING for tech-trained/tech-capable workers such as electricians, pipefitters, welders, plumbers, machinists, millwrights, and steelworkers.

Now, those are NOT air-conditioned computer programmers and phone call salesmen.

For sure...and if Trump actually does make progress on Illegal Immigration...it’s a game changer in those fields for Americans and probably flips the salary curve relative to ‘the arts’.

A masters degree in Twelfth century Tibetan poetry along with a double in classical studies won’t get you very far along with 100k of student loans to pay off.

Sounds a bit like Scientology where people pay many thousands of dollars and get nothing in return for their investment.
