Why bother owning a pet if you're not going to treat it like this? What possible excuse could there be for any pet owner not to take their dog or cat with them when they flee a natural disaster?
People who mistreat or neglect pets they've deliberately chosen to take responsibility for, pets who trust them and depend on them, are not likely to treat their fellow man much better.

"Why bother owning a pet if you're not going to treat it like this?" It's way more common than you'd think. I've met so many people who treat their pets as just a "thing", more of their "stuff". Really. For example weird people getting bored with their family dog, so they give it to a shelter and buy a new, more fashionable breed.
For many folks, a dog or cat is just another accoutrement, a fashion statement, but excess baggage in times of crisis. The worst thing for any breed is to get featured in a popular movie or TV show.

Why bother owning a pet if you're not going to treat it like this? Probably 50% of dog owners are not responsible enough to own a dog. No joke.
