With its recipe of celebrities, sequins and pizzazz Strictly Come Dancing has firmly captured the hearts of the British public and even made ballroom dancing fashionable again.
But the BBC is now set to court controversy with some viewers of the show with the possible introduction of same-sex dancing partners.
The move follows a backlash by LGBT activists against the lesbian writer and comic Susan Calman for agreeing to dance with a man.
Richard Coles, Calmans fellow contestant on the latest series of the show, which opened on Saturday night, has now revealed that discussions have been held with the BBC over the issue of same-sex dancing partners. The Church of England vicar, who is gay, said: "We've had a discussion about it actually, and I don't know. I mean, it's in no sense that anyone resists the idea in principle, it's just a question of doing it.
Coles, a former member of the pop duo The Communards, said he would be more than happy to dance with a male partner on the show, adding: "I think it's a good year to do it actually, with the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Decriminalisation Act."
The BBC has told The Telegraph it has not ruled out introducing same-sex dancing partners onto Strictly at some stage in the near future, but will not do so for the current series.
Calman yesterday hit out at members of the LGBT community who criticised her on social media forums for taking part in the show because it does not have same-sex dancing couples.
She said she had spent years campaigning in favour of gay and lesbian rights and was now just happy to dance.

You can’t have something classy these days like ballroom dancing without someone wanting to turn it into something depraved instead.
So they want to lock in the gender of your dance partner into who you would have sex with? Are they saying dancing leads to sex? Or that they want it to? Is Kevin Bacon involved?
It’s more refreshing on So You Think You Can Dance, where they do everything, male female dances, fun Broadway style dances with a few guys, or a cute hip hop number with girls. You never know. And there is no focus on gay or straight.
Homos gotta homo.
I personally don't like any of the dancing or talent shows. My British wife loves Strictly which means I have to put up with it. I'll get my revenge when she has to sit next to me tonight and watch Fear The Walking Dead.
I imagine a show that could have continued for years will die soon because of this. I’m okay with that outcome.
Crazy mixed up people.
A lesbian wants to dance with a man. Well they were so outraged at her. Like it was a blasphemy.
What, does she have to identify as bi?
Crazy world.
I really don’t thing that “Dancing with the Faggots” will earn a profitable viewership.
the 90% of us who are not faggots or faggot enablers have our stomachs turn at this sort of thing.
It will happen here, as well.
The Church of England vicar, who is gay
Wha-wha-what?
We probably don’t wanna know
We used to watch DWTS because the dancing was spectacular. We don’t much watch anymore, after they started spotlighting gays and transgenders. The dancing isn’t as good as it once was. I guess the producers don’t care about revenue, in the face of political correctness.
I wonder how long it’ll take for DWTS to have them?
Liberals will make every show a homo-promo.
