Isn’t the proof in the pudding here?

The facts are in.

It’s pretty obvious this wasn’t one of the best software people.

This is a legitimate beef > IMO.

If I were a director, I’d be covering my posterior by appointing someone with a stellar education in the field, as well as a stellar resume in this specific specialty.

I agree. She has excellent credentials from other employment.

Agreed. And the music-related disparagement is idiotic.

I agree. Millions of people, myself included, have college degrees that are completely unrelated to the careers we eventually succeeded at.

I would usualy agree with your comment because I’ve been there and done that without a computer relat d degree but these days and with the unique position equifax is in they really needed a very qualified person in that position. I see many C suite types headed for the door over this.

...and many software people have deep background in music.

But SOME training would have been good.

CIOs and CISOs are members of e-staff and frequently do not tech or security backgrounds. They often are more steeped in planning, budgeting, people management, and corporate politics than tech.

Sure. But what do you think the odds are that this particular individual is one of those self-made computer experts? Do you picture her spending long hours reading the manuals and hacking away to figure out how things work?

And while we're on the subject, how many self-made computer experts were music majors? The ones I knew didn't have a degree of any kind. To get a degree in music, you have to make a conscious decision that music is going to be your focus, and that your time is best spent pursuing that particular focus. Self-made computer guys I knew spent all of their time doing COMPUTER STUFF. Big difference.

VERDICT: diversity hire

Absolutely. There is no degree in “computer security” anyhow.

I have a relative who fits that model, and he’s quite successful.

As for degrees.. at 50+ years old I’ve worked with highly valued colleagues with degrees in subject matter that does not normally mate to their role.
