Yeah, it was. But it didn’t last long as a Cat 4.

Now it’s a Cat 5 with 160 mph sustained, gusts to 200.

Incredible. Yes, as soon as I posted "Cat 4" yesterday, Maria grew to a catastropic Cat 5!

Looks like a direct hit on Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other islands in the area (whose names escape me right now, sorry).

We have friends who have a vacation place in St. Croix (that they rent out to help pay for it). They are NOT happy right now. Fortunately no one is in the place right now.

Is that Puerto Rico? I've never been there...

Pretty place, wherever it is.

Praying for the people of Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and all people in Maria's path.

Enough already with these hurricanes!

Hebert Box--I posted info about Hebert Box(es) at the top of the first two Irma threads, and it is also in post #5 of this thread.

The El Yunque National Forest is going to be devastated if it stays on that track. Lots of rare birds have their habitats there.

Yep, St. Croix managed to avoid the worst of Irma, but it looks like they won’t be so lucky this time around. And St. Johns is going to feel it, too, albeit, not quite as bad as with Irma, but coming so soon afterwards, it’s going to be a big pain for them as well.

Oh, Dominica... thank you.

So beautiful, so sad. I hope no one was killed or hurt there. Sad to think what Dominica looks like today... :-(

Unfortunately, I have not been to PR and probably will not make it on my bucket list. My wife won’t go where I can’t drive her, stopping once every 48 hours for a quilt or needle arts shop. I have made it coast to coast and as far north as Cape Breton Island following that limitation.

In years past I have been overseas, a number of times, but not the airlines have her picture.

Hurricane Maria Does 'Mind Boggling' Damage to Dominica, Leader Says

Based on the few photos in this article, it looks as though many buildings in Dominica are still standing...

That's because those pics were from Martinique.

Please disregard my post #270.

dfwgator correctly pointed out that those photos of standing buildings, etc. are from Martinique, not Dominica...

Seems like getting any info out of Dominica is very slow, which isn’t a good sign. I see a lot of desperate Twitter posts from people who have loved ones there who haven’t heard anything since yesterday.

The two I posted were pulled off of web images of Dominica. Now, since I didn’t take them myself, I don’t know for sure but either way they are representative of the Leeward Islands type coastal cites hit.

I saw a few pictures reportedly from Dominica, but I saw that in fact, they were from other storms. I saw a lot of that during Irma, too, people like to post BS pics which are not accurate.

I agree, it is troubling. The only info that I have seen is all based on that Prime Minister/President's Facebook posts from last night.

Mudslides are probably going to be responsible for most of the loss of life on Dominica. A lot of houses there are on in the hills and mountains.
