According to CNN, “The government snooping continued into early this year, including a period when Manafort was known to talk to President Donald Trump.”

This will not be allowed to become a big scandal because the media and the Republicans won’t allow it to become one. It will, however, become a shield against the next few attacks and another straw that will eventually break the back of the fake Mueller investigation. On balance this is a plus.

the legal problem to that goal was Posse Comitatus; with only a few narrow legal exceptions US law forbids civilian law enforcement from working with the military:
The framers wanted to avoid scenarios that wore then common in Europe or today like much of Latin America, where you have 16 year old soldiers walking around civilian road checkpoints with machine guns.
so they lied and said that the Waco Davidians were dealing drugs and robbing banks; these legal exceptions to Posse Comitatus would provide the cops legal cover for receiving that military training.
this is the same reason why The Swamp lied about “Muh Russians”:
the Trump campaign was full of Americans, of course, and you can’t use American spy gear against them for just any casual reason.
it was never really a legit suspicion it was just legal cover, just like the Waco lies.
