More Realtors Carry Guns for Safety

Posted on 09/19/2017 1:12:47 PM PDT by marktwain

25 percent of men and 12 percent of women members of The National Association of Realtors (NAR) carry self defense firearms, according to the 2017 safety report. The number of members who carried a firearm totaled 19 percent.

The organization has published safety reports that show how many member carry weapons since 2015.

In 2014 real estate agent Beverly Carter was kidnapped and murdered. The crime made national news.  The president elect of the National Association of Realtors vowed to make safety a priority.

From cnn.com:

Carter was killed in September, “Realtor Safety Month,” for the National Association of Realtors.

The group's president elect, Chris Polychron, has promised to make safety a priority when he takes office.

“We're not going to let it die, I can tell you that,” he said. “It's sad that it took a tragic death of one of our own to run the red flag up.”

An article from 2014 reported this step as being recommended by the National Association of Realtors:

10. Don’t assume that everyone has left the premises at the end of an open house. Check all of the rooms and the backyard prior to locking the doors. Be prepared to defend yourself, if necessary.

The man who murdered Beverly Carter was convicted in January of 2015.

Chris Polychron took office as president of NAR in 2015. The NAR conducted the first survey showing how many of its members carried weapons. In 2015, 12 percent of members reported they carried a gun.

From therealdaily.com:

Interestingly, according to the National Association of REALTORS 2015 Member Safety Report, 12 percent of agents who responded said that they already carry a gun in the field.

Realtors are main street America.

When 19% of realtors carry a gun for protection, you know that carry for self defense has become mainstream.

So is that what they’re calling them these days, “Battery Operated Noise Maker?”

More Realtors in Texas carry guns than the numbers show. A ccw license is now part of the continuing education program.

Shocked the heck out of me when I got the notice. Generally the Real Estate industry does not do anything that is remotely controversial.

Bring a trained German Shepherd or similar guard dog to all open houses, and have it search the house and yard with you at the end of these events.

25 percent of men and 12 percent of women

Well THOSE numbers certainly need to be reversed - and then improved upon.

I can't imagine a male real estate agent being a target...

This guy in Toronto could have used a gun. Or some muscle from his mafia family:

My BIL carries when going to houses. He does a lot of rentals in iffy neighborhoods and a lot of dispossessions. His big fear is big nasty dogs used by tenants to prevent guys like him from performing their duties.

I ca’nt think of a pocket knife as a protective weapon unless what is meant is a stiletto, or a poniard in a sheath

Wow. I would have expected a national organization forbidding guns to be a realtor.

Good news.

My Wife is a Broker/Owner. She does not carry.

I do.

I always discuss with Her whom she is meeting with (She NEVER advertises and has only worked with known people since 2004) and make sure I do a drive-by when she is showing property.

Can’t be safe enough.

She’s the best, most honest and dependable Realtor in SW Montana.

I know some of you despise Realtors and Lawyers - I come from a long line of Judges and Attorneys - the rare and good kind.

Once I was in the Hospital and my Doctors partner came to look in on Me...I said it was nice to meet Him and that he knew my Uncle...’Who’s your Uncle?’ I mentioned his name and He smiled.

He responded: ‘He’s the only Lawyer in the entire county that any Doctor would invite to a cocktail party.’

There ARE some good Attorneys and Realtors.

I take care of my Wife’s security.

thanks very much, this is useful and interesting.

i am betting the reported percentages are low
(since in some big urban cities some respondents may not have wished to disclose what they’re carrying...but MOST of them are carrying in at least certain of our larger urban areas that’s for sure!)

actually, male agents are frequently targets

but i do agree that the female agents need to carry a lot more than the survey claims

i think the reported numbers are very low, at least in major urban areas. possibly in more civilized, safer smaller towns it is not necessary to carry

in NY, ChiTown, Atlanta, St Louis, Philly, San Fransicko, LA...and so on....you can BET almost very realty agent is carrying!!!!!!!
whether they report it in a survey or not

*shrug* - if several cases in my local area are any indication, it's usually a rape crime on a female agent showing a property.

A former manager of mine retired and went into the business - and was raped and strangled under just these circumstances.

Des Moines, Iowa, real estate agent Ashley Oakland was murdered after a townhouse showing in 2011. Never solved. A popular theory is that she was a random victim of a gang initiation.

yes

in some cases, it is robbery

in other areas, it is rape and males are very popular rape targets in certain cities

nowadays

sorry to have to mention the obvious, but there it is

Oh, man. When I was looking for the cabin I'm living in now I was taken to some fairly isolated places. But one of them was in the middle of town, and my realtor (a good guy, BTW) and I went into it and I noticed a sort of weird look on his face. There were kettles in the kitchen and sleeping bags and pizza boxes on the floor. "Uh, are you carrying?" he asked me. Yeah, I said. "Good. We're just going to back out the door, OK?"

Later he told me the place was supposed to be empty and that he'd called the cops on the meth cookers who were there. And he always carries now.
