Brazilian police said Tuesday that a British woman missing during an attempt to paddle the entire Amazon by kayak has been murdered and that three people are in custody.

The Amazonas state police force said a 17-year-old suspect has confessed to being part of a gang that shot Emma Kelty, 43, stole her electronic gear and cash, then dumped her body in a river.

The adolescent was arrested in Codajas, 240 kilometers (150 miles) from the state capital Manaus. Two more people have been arrested and a further four are still wanted, police chief Frederico Mendes in a statement.

It is a jungle out there.

People don't go into Central Park after dark.

Times haven't changed since the 16th /17th / 18th century explorers.

I’m going to sound harsh here, but blissninnyism is a typical side effect of multiculturalism.

RIP and condolences to the family.

But adventures in lawless backwaters are so edgy. What could go wrong?

The BBC has an article about this with an oddly punctuated title.

British kayaker Emma Kelty 'murdered' on Amazon trip

Snip....

"Speaking to BBC Surrey in February, she talked about the risks she would face in the Amazon, including "people who organ-harvest and rob and fire guns".

Asked if she was risking her life on these adventures, she said: "Oh yes, I mean that's half the challenge.

"But it's about minimising the risk. I'm going to a self-defence course which is going to be tailored to de-arming people, so if I do come across that situation at least I'm prepared for it."

"Her last tweet was on 13 September. The day before she tweeted that she saw "30 to 50 men armed with rifles and arrows in boats".

Ms Kelty, in a Facebook post on 10 September, wrote about the dangers of the area she was entering:

"So in or near Coari (100km away) I will have my boat stolen and I will be killed too. Nice."

After travelling past the town, she posted two days later: "Am in the clear. All OK".

According to another article, she posted how she met 3 nice men....one of whom confessed being complicit in her murder. A 20ga sawed off shotgun was the weapon.

Asked if she was risking her life on these adventures, she said: "Oh yes, I mean that's half the challenge.

There is no chance she was a conservative or prior military. Those of us with common sense know that risking your life is not a positive. It's sad that, as a leftist, she had so little in her life that she felt the need to take these risks to feel alive.

How sad for her family and friends. Perhaps they supported her doing dangerous and worthless things for excitement, though.

But, how far did she get? How did she know where to find the beginning?

Never made it to the Amazon but I did make it to several large Brazilian cities...including Rio.Brazil is one of the most dangerous, violent countries on earth.Even during the day one must be on guard for violent criminals.

I'm glad I went there....but *never* again.

Brazil, the land of sandals and machetes.

Lots of video on the innerweb of Brazil people meting out vigilante justice to criminals and even murdering people.

The prison videos are the best, because I don’t feel sorry for them.

A bunch of years ago my niece was going to go on a boat trip down the Amazon (not the entire Amazon) but backed out after learning about the vaccinations that were recommended and the dangerous insects she could get bitten by...........I wouldn’t go either.
