5 things to know about Trump's new North Korea sanctions

BY JONATHAN EASLEY AND REBECCA KHEEL - 09/21/17 05:45 PM EDT

/snip

“Foreign financial institutions are now on notice that, going forward, they can choose to do business with the United States, or with North Korea, but not both,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters at a briefing on the sanctions.

The executive order does that by giving the Treasury Department the authority to suspend U.S. correspondent account access to any foreign bank that knowingly conducts or facilitates significant transactions tied to trade with North Korea.

/snip

In another move hitting North Korea’s economy, the sanctions also target the country’s trade and shipping by blocking physical access to the United States for a time.

Ships and aircraft that have visited North Korea will be banned from entering the United States for 180 days. Also, any ship that has engaged in a ship-to-ship transfer with one that has visited North Korea will be banned from the United States for the same amount of time.

Do we have the technology, to know which ships and aircraft have visited North Korea, and if any have done ship to ship transfers?

Ships don’t commit crime. People do. Banning ships is like banning guns.

I came across a report that U.S. is now monitoring Sino-N. Korea border for any oil smuggling. They would do probably the same for ships and aircraft. They may lie they are going somewhere else but they are being watched. I suspect they are using aerial surveillance and spy satellites.

Sounds rather impressive.

It’s also of note, that any ship transferring cargo originating in N.K., will also be banned for six months.

This may weed out an attempt to slip a device in.

Trump seems to be on top of it, and even China has opted to stop bank activity with N.K. (at last one bank involved, not sure about others)

Commercial satellites have that capability today (as in, you personally can buy satellite imagery that your computer can process and correlate with online transponder histories), let alone military.

Sagar, it causes shipping companies to “THINK” about who they want to do business with. It really clamps down on N.K.’s options.

It also prevents Kim from shipping “a device” to the U.S. on the spur of the moment.

Even if a device went off in our harbors, it would be devastating.

This isn’t like blaming something on a gun.

It’s reducing delivery systems, as well as putting economic pressure on Kim.

This has teeth in it.

And if it meets with some success, guess what we’ll be implementing on Iran sooner or later.

I like this.

Banning ships will get the attention of the people who own the ship. More to the point, many other nations will also adopt these sanctions, reducing the number of ports they can serve. A ship that has to sit in port due to having nowhere to go turns into a gigantic money sink.

It is China's natural inclination to do as little as possible if they are left alone. He needs to go ahead with his plans despite whatever China promised to do and keep up the pressure on China. Then China will finally get the message and be seriously on board.

If not, they face economic hardship and U.S. military attacks on their doorstep.

Commerical ship and aircraft tracking is available in real time online. On top of that is intelligence gathering. Any aircraft or vessel entering or leaving North Korea is going to be suspect. The chance of the North getting caught smuggling just went up as did the consquences. No shipping company wants to be caught violating a multi-national embargo lead by the U.S.

The elephant in the room is will China follow through. This will show where China really stands. They have to make a decision, they can't stall anymore, and they know Trump will take action. So far Trump likes what he sees from China. We'll see if they mean it for once, but I would not bet either way.

Talking point war? AP Just issued their 5 points and the Hill has theirs. Are they (MSM) just simplifying it for the people whom they feel are simpletons? I can picture the meetings where the MSM talking heads coordinate their presentation to the public.

People don't carry vast quantities of cargo that can be exchanged for money with which to fund North Korea's weapons programs. Ships do.

.....”China has opted to stop bank activity with N.K. (at last one bank involved, not sure about others)”......

China’s banking institutions are very large and linked to other banks....China has told ‘ALL OF THEM’ they do business with has to stop with N.Korea.
