Woman calls veteran's PTSD service dog 'nasty' in viral video
Fox News ^ | September 21, 2017 | Staff

An argument broke out at a Delaware restaurant this week after a woman complained to a veteran that service dogs inside eateries are “nasty.”

The video shows Ciara Miller standing inside of Kathy’s Crab House arguing with a small group of people, including a man holding a leash of a Great Dane wearing a vest that read: “PTSD service dog.”

At one point a woman off camera is heard telling Miller the dog’s owner is a military veteran, the News Journal in Wilmington reported.

Miller is heard responding the point is irrelevant and having an animal in a restaurant is “nasty.”

“I’m not going to keep my opinions to myself,” Miller said in the video. “I’m going to voice it just like I did. There’s nothing you can do about it.”

She said restaurants should have an area designated for service animals.

The American with Disabilities Act requires restaurants to admit patrons with service animals. In Delaware, the law is not extended to emotional support animals.

The YouTube video has been watched more than 400,000 times.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the restaurant addressed the video, calling it “embarrassing.”

Autistic kids often get companion animals to calm them down when they are having a meltdown.

Those with epilepsy can do the same.

But I don’t know of a dog that can cure bitchitis.

I would recommend that she get a dog and name it Life so she has one.

Thanks for the mention. Animals have an amazing ability to change us for the better when we’re going through tough times.

I’m glad that worked out for you.

A few times in my life I’ve gotten the “bird bug” if you will. They ones I had were so dirty, I couldn’t cope with them.

Glad you could/had a better system than I did.

Sounds almost as if he’s a full grown member of the family.

People can get very attached to their dogs. That’s mutually rewarding.

Thanks for tell us about your dog.

I don't think emotional support animals qualify, but according the the ADA definitions from the DOJ website, PTSD assist animals do so he is allowed in a restaurant.

I didn't read the article from this thread, but I do know that the restaurant in question is endorsing an organization that educates the public about the ADA laws on service dogs.

Oh, I ensured that the parrot always had a fresh picture of Jane Fonda on the bottom of his cage and his aim was excellent.

Well...I would disagree with her on HOW she handled this. But people have really taken advantage of so-called “service” dogs. Renters have figured out that they can keep their pets in no pet rentals by claiming they are “service” dogs or cats. This particular dog may not have been nasty, but there is NO way to police this anymore. Anybody can come into a restaurant or a store with a pet dog, cat, pig or snake and claim it’s a “Service” animal. Doesn’t matter if it’s clean or well behaved. There are no standards. A “Service” animal is completely self defined.

Please, you should understand that he is a well, firmly disciplined dog, who’s never treated as a quasi-human and has never been spoiled in his entire life. After all, a dog is a dog.

No offense intended. Honestly, dogs do become a part of the family dynamic, and I don’t have a problem with people acting as if they are another member of the family.

Of course that’s in the home and the normal family setting.

I don’t mean the dog should be treated that way in public, or that become an excuse to push the dog off on people and situations that are inappropriate.

If the animal is any where near my wife she will develop severe medical problems, so we just get up and leave, no drama, we just get out as quickly as possible.

ALL dogs are capable of acting out on something that spooks them. Plus a Great Dane is just too damn big to be in a restaurant. I’m dismayed at the number of people equating animals to humans.

I would have hit her so hard in the mouth she’d never get up. I’m not a gun owner but I’ve had martial arts training. Most often if I’m out and about I wear steel toed sneakers or boots. Gives you a nice edge if you know what I mean.
