Full title: U.S. Denies Request for Puerto Rico Jones Act Waiver as Senator McCain Applies Even More Pressure
By Timothy Gardner WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (Reuters) The Trump administration on Tuesday denied a request to waive shipping restrictions to help get fuel and supplies to storm-ravaged Puerto Rico, saying it would do nothing to address the islands main impediment to shipping, damaged ports.
The Jones Act limits shipping between coasts to U.S. flagged vessels. However, in the wake of brutal storms, the government has occasionally issued temporary waivers to allow the use of cheaper, tax free or more readily available foreign-flagged ships.
The Department of Homeland Security, which waived the act after hurricanes Harvey and Irma, did not agree an exemption would help this time.

Whoraldo is down there now doing coverage for Fox and is very close to calling the recovery a Katrina fiasco.
As it wears on the MSM is going to go full speed on showing the misery there and blame it on Trump.
Why do we have such a law to begin with? Corrupt dock worker unions?
Whoraldo was going to call it a Katrina fiasco regardless of what happened. Too bad the Ricans kicked out Vieques and Roosevelt Roads Naval Station.
It’s hard to figure you who is the biggest attention whore on these things, Johnny Boy or Whorealdo?
What would Puerto Rico do without it’s senator McCain?
Wait! Say what?
Shipowners protecting their monopoly.
Dockworkers load and unload foreign flagged as well as American flagged ships. The Jones Act has the support of the maritime unions, the shipowners of those ships, the shipyard owners and workers that build the ships and a good part of the defense sector that wants a reliable fleet to move military cargo in the event of a war.
The media wants this to be Trumps slow response for brown people narrative.
Put simply, the “Jones Act” requires that
if your origin and destination are within the U.S.
then you have to be an American flagged vessel.
This was to keep foreign flagged vessels from controlling American shipping.
The US has had similar laws since 1789. It’s what countries do to protect their borders and industry
We also have similar rules for cargo airlines.
A foreign airline cannot say pick up air cargo at JFK
and unload it in Chicago.

“Why do we have such a law to begin with? Corrupt dock worker unions?”
No. cheap, unsafe foreign ships that meet no standards, that use cheap foreign labor of dubious quality, and which are “registered/flagged” in hellholes like Liberia.
it’s a good law. and we need more laws like it.
its tough, everyone is undermining Trump. They all must be scared he is going to uncover their failures
Dock workers get paid whether they are loading an American flagged ship or a Liberian or Panamanian flagged ship. The ones that would loose out are the masters, mates and crews of American flagged ships.
McCain is for it....I am automatically against it.
Exactly.
And one hundred percent of the people who oppose it have as a goal weakening our national strength and sovereignty.
Which entirely explains McCain.
Trump is stupid to wait until next Tuesday. He should have gone this week, as he did with Houston. It means NOTHING, but it is about mastering the image, which Reagan did to perfection.
This is not a simple matter of going in and going out that you can do in the Continental US. It’s a major time commitment, and it would only be a distraction right now that would disrupt the relief efforts.
Besides, no matter what Trump does, the Press will find fault with it.
This shouldn’t apply to Puerto Rico anyhow.
With or without hurricane, it should include Puerto Rico.
