Editorial: What was missing from Donald Trump’s response to Las Vegas massacre?

Is that the best you can do, Mr. President?

Hours after the nation’s worst mass shooting in modern history, Donald Trump told the nation, correctly, that the slaughter was “an act of pure evil.”

But then the president, who threatens to annihilate other nations, suggested, in the wake of 58 deaths and more than 500 wounded in Las Vegas, that there’s nothing to be done about mass murder on the home front by an American apparently unaffiliated with foreign terrorists. “In times such as these, I know we are searching for some kind of meaning in the chaos, some kind of light in the darkness,” he said. “The answers do not come easy.”

Actually, the answers begin with toughening of the nation’s gun laws, starting with a reinstatement of the Assault Weapons Ban that was on the books for just 10 years following a 1993 massacre in the Bay Area.

Sadly, Congress made a decision to do nothing. And Obama’s successor apparently has no inclination to do anything either.

Instead, Trump said, “we can take solace knowing that even the darkest space can be brightened by a single light and even the most terrible despair can be illuminated by a single ray of hope.”

There is much we still don’t know about the shooter’s motives. But, please, spare the rhetoric that one shouldn’t politicize this horrific event.

If we shy from politics, Congress will never act, and there will soon be yet another mass shooting record set.

What??? That statement by President Trump was fantastic. People who truly feel the grief know that this is not a time to be fighting for their political agenda.

Melania was wearing the wrong shoes for mourning. Didn’t have ashes on her head.

These are political addicts. Nothing in life is as important to them as their fix, not empathy, not human decency, not a sense of propriety, nothing. This business of “if we didn’t politicize it, Congress would do nothing” is one of the most self-damning sentences I’ve read in years.

Actually, the answers begin with repealing the nation’s gun laws, and recognizing that "gun control" is unconstitutional and an affront to We the People.

Yet the author presents no evidence that this would have prevented this shooting.

As has been pointed out on this site this morning, good thing he did not use a big truck. Or bombs.

We have confirmed evidence that the shooter was a Democrat at this point, and this worthless POS is trying to blame Trump?

I’d easily put $100 bucks on the writer of this editorial having his own plot to massacre conservatives.

What’s the point of outlawing Assault Weapons if Democrats are going to sell them to Mexican drug lords?

So, the assault weapons ban expired in 2003? And Clinton’s successor didn’y Do anything to resurrect it? NEITHER DID THE DEMS, WHEN THEY CONTROLLED EVERYTHING UNDER OBAMA. The hypocrisy of Dems and their Media is mind-boggling!
