So, he didn’t obtain a full auto gun but rather he made his own.

At this point nothing would surprise me. Maybe he was mentor to a younger gunman, like the Beltway shooter was.

FWIW, I want to discourage wild speculation, but can't help throwing out a theory: Paddock was a gambler. Many gamblers are bipolar. Maybe he was too.
