GOP Leaders Have Completely Lost Control Of Their Base
Hotair.com ^ | 10/2/17

With the dust still settling, many Washington Republicans are mystified—and alarmed—by the fact that not even Donald “Drain the Swamp” Trump had enough populist cred to swing a primary race to his candidate in deep-red Alabama. While the GOP’s class of professional strategists are generally ambivalent at best when it comes to the president, they had taken a certain comfort in believing that he was fully in command of his base. The assumption allowed them to draw conclusions about what his voters wanted, how to cater to them—and how to avoid drawing their wrath.

But Alabama fully punctured the illusion that Trump was in control. For all the race’s idiosyncrasies—Trump’s endorsement of the more establishment-friendly candidate was uncharacteristic for him, and his support often seemed conflicted—it seemed to reveal that there was a limit to his supporters’ loyalty.

Trump didn’t want Strange to win... I believe that Trump knew he would lose, but didn’t want another bitched-off McCain in the Senate, reflexively voting against his legislation.

'Lost control of'

?

Trump was the man for the time, But Trump did not lead anyone, he merely had the courage to walk to the front a large crowd moving in that direction. He can't change the course of that crowd - only organize and help intensify it ... and also lend the weak among that crowd some courage. But he never picked the direction.

Do they honestly think I consider the ryans, mcconnells, and kasichs of the world to be my leaders?

They couldn’t lead a kindergarten class to the lunchroom.

They seem to be making the mistake of thinking that the GOP base is as mindless a mob of zombies as the Democrat base.

Makes me laugh. They still think they were fooling us. Trump got what he needed and that old coot McConnell got what he deserved.

Fine outcome.

Trumps support might have mattered MUCH more if neither of the choices was well known. But everyone already knew who Roy Moore was and what he stood for, and a half hearted endorsement by Trump wasn’t going to chance their mind.

exactly.

we have been betrayed by the GOP for decades.

RINO’s like BUSH 1st and 2nd sold us down the river with liberal supreme court appointments which helped liberals 1000 times more than anything to win the culture war.

No you vile snakes. What you don't understand is that we see Moore as someone who is not susceptible to the Potomac Fever that seems to grip just about everyone we send to Washington DC. We are sick and tired of "our" representatives joining the other side against us, and we think Judge Moore is someone who will not do that.

After Mitch McConnell ran his racist attack ads against McDaniel in Mississippi, we figured out just exactly what sort of vermin we had "representing" us in Washington.

They need to be scared.

Very true about the Bush’s. Their globalist, NWO crap has added lots of fuel to the fire that is leading to the destruction of this country. Total POSs.

Bush 2, played the game with his easy going, country attitude and being approachable. The other side to that coin, he was a straight globalist, NWO, CFR scumbag.

I wonder if any of the so called leaders are the least bit ashamed that one of the people wounded in the baseball practice attack that wounded Steve Scalise was a lobbyist for the insurance industry?

The left wing nut job who did the shooting did the country one favor. He showed again how rotten the system really is.

Political party “leaders” aren’t supposed to control the citizens who comprise its base.

They are supposed to represent the interests of the citizens.

They NEVER had CONTROL of their base! They once had our support but squandered that. Control? Sheesh!

They’re not supposed to control their base. They’re supposed to serve the interests of their base.

It would have been much more appropriate to have said, “GOP Leaders Have Squandered the Confidence of Their Base.”

The title says it all about what is wrong with US politics for both Republican and Democrat Party leaders.

People are fed up with politicians! Very low approval ratings. In such a situation it isn't the Party elites that control the people, it is the people/voters who are voting and supporting who they feel will best help them and their country.

Hillary didn't get it. Mark Rubia and Jeb Bush didn't get it.

Sanders and Trump got it.

Too true! They were also to some extent the driving force behind Trump’s victory as well.
