If you listen to the scanner tapes, he stopped shooting at the crowd around the time he shot the security guard. So he knew his position was known. He switched from shooting outside to defending the door entry. The police backed off and waited for swat because he had stopped shooting outward. And of course cause he had full auto.

In another report it said the first shots were at around 10:00, and the first call at 10:08. That seems way to long - but I guess if I was under fire my first instinct would not be to call 911.
And a shout-out to the brave Security Guard. There was a local attack years ago where a CCW carrier confronted the bad guy shooting up the mall. The good guy got shot (and paralyzed), but the bad guy fled into a store and closet - thus ending his shooting spree. (Later found in the store and arrested.) One man CAN make a difference.
