Other reports state that the shooting only lasted about 15 minutes or so. By the time the police arrived at the room, had the shooter already been dead for nearly an hour? What was going on during that time?

It took about 11 minutes for LE to arrive at the room and engage. At that point the reign of terror outside was over.

The chronology is sketchy still, and it appears from some reports the perp shot at least one security guard and perhaps one LEO during the hallway gunfight before offing himself.

When first responders got to the hotel room, Paddock shot through the door, striking one of the hotel's security guards in the leg.

So no, he wasn't dead for an hour. It seems llike he did what shooting he wanted to do, and waited for law enforcement to arrive. Perhaps he was watching the chaos he created on the ground.

According to this report, at 10:14, a police officer says he is on the 31st floor of Mandalay Bay.

“I can hear the automatic fire coming from one floor ahead, one floor above us,” the office says quietly.

“Just be advised,” another officer says. “It is automatic fire, fully automatic fire from an elevated position. Take cover.”

“I’m right below it,” the first officer says.

10:24 p.m. Up on the 32nd floor, police and security officers are closing in on room 135. An officer calls for a SWAT team after the gunman shot through his door and wounded a hotel security guard who accompanied the officers.

“We have a security officer shot in the leg on 32 floor,” an officer says. “He shot down the hallway and hit a security guard.”

According to the above report, it seems a bit misleading to say that it took 72 minutes.

My Sister was there, she was walking along the strip from cirque de ole and her husband wanted to make his way towards the Mandalay and the concert but she was tired and begging him to go back to the Tuscany Hotel.

She said she heard shots fired and then about five minutes of running towards the Tuscany she said she saw more police cars race down the strip than she ever knew existed.
