Discredited gun researcher John Lott’s misleading Las Vegas massacre claims are falling apart
Media Matters ^ | October 3, 2017 | Timothy Johnson

Posted on 10/04/2017 4:11:53 PM PDT by OttawaFreeper

Discredited gun researcher John Lott attacked strong firearms regulations in a FoxNews.com op-ed with a dishonest comparison between the United States and Europe relating to gun laws and public massacres. Following a mass shooting sniper attack on a Las Vegas country music concert that left 59 dead and more than 500 people wounded, Lott -- a go-to source for conservative misinformation about gun violence following high-profile shootings -- published an opinion piece at FoxNews.com comparing machine gun attacks in Europe versus the United States

Looking at the statistics he quotes, he may as well argue that European laws concerning knife or blunt instrument possession must be stricter than that of the United States because non firearms homicides in Europe are committed at a lower rate than in the United States. And also looking at suicide rates, I've personally known for a long time that European and Japanese in particular tend to be greatly higher than in North America (United States and Canada).

Johnson does not seem to consider the American rate he quotes comprises of murders committed in places like Chicago, DC, and New York City where stricter laws are accompanied by much higher rates of violence compared to Vermont or Montana or Maine where the laws are much less stringent. He does not even get out of the starting gate without contradicting himself very greatly.

If you take out black on black gun crime the US is a very safe country.

Lott is a straight shooter(pun intended) that deserves and has earned our support.

John Lott is "discredited," but this invisible hack with no credentials at all is supposed to be believable?

No, Fake Newsman, YOU and your fellow whores are the ones who are discredited. If you say the sun rises in the east, I'll have to go outside at dawn with a compass.

I live in Maine, where guns are everywhere.

People here can carry a weapon on their person or in their vehicle without a permit.

Meanwhile, the crime rate is one of the lowest in the country.

John Lott is not “discredited.” His research is unequaled. Media Matters is full of horsefeathers. Another hoary leftist tactic: accuse the other of doing what you are doing.

Discredited fake “news” site launches an ad hominem attack on an honest man.

“Liberals” decide what their policy preferences are first. All “logic” and “facts” follow from their conclusion, not from representative data and actual logic.

To be honest, the above is, up to now, pretty much a mirror-image ad hominem argument. So let’s get to some salient facts. On the issue of gun deaths, 2/3 of them are suicides. And of the rest, most are not committed by whites but by blacks, primarily against each other. Black on black gun violence is presumably a lot less prominent in Europe than in the US - just because black immigration to Europe has not been comparable to that involuntary immigration to the colonies which later became the US (not all that much immigration from Africa to the US after 1808:

The Migration or Importation of such Persons as any of the States now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the Year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such Importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each Person.

Lott has warned us about multiple-victim shootings in gun-free venues.

Mandalay Bay is one huge gun-free zone.

Mandalay Bay Policies

Weapons of any type (guns, knives, nightsticks, mace, pepper spray, stun guns etc.) are strictly prohibited on Mandalay Bay property. Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies may carry weapons on Mandalay Bay property in the performance of their official duties. These agencies must contact Mandalay Bay Security Management prior to arriving on property. (Rule 5)

Although a concealed weapon (pistol) would be of little use at 400 yards for most, the presence of firearms discourage evil interference. Seeing how quickly Paddock folded, when armed men showed up at this door, that Security Guard who knocked on his door, could have returned fire and stopped the carnage.

Overall, the association between stronger gun laws and lower gun violence is well-established. As the Harvard Injury Control Research Center has concluded, “A broad array of evidence indicates that gun availability is a risk factor for homicide, both in the United States and across high-income countries. Case-control studies, ecological time-series and cross-sectional studies indicate that in homes, cities, states and regions in the U.S., where there are more guns, both men and women are at a higher risk for homicide, particularly firearm homicide.”

So firearm homicide rates must be close to zero in states such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Kalifornia?

Looking at the countries he compares American homicide and suicide rates with, he adds in Australia and South Korea.

But shouldn’t Switzerland be an important addition? Or would that very obviously contradict him even more because even with licencing and registration provisions concerning firearms acquisition and possession in that country, that is a very nominal sort of thing when men are issued automatic rifles as part of their military service and usually get to keep them after they are past active duty age, large private collections of handguns and other firearms are quite common there, and that youngsters go to rifle practice on weekend mornings. All of this accompanied with a very low homicide rate.
