NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.
The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.
Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.
Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.
The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

That photo reminds me of the Hiller fire in Oakland in ‘91.
I did about 100 layouts of replacement houses after that one, and it was very depressing to see the destruction.
They were eucalyptus trees mostly, and burned so hot that china dishes and rocks in the concrete foundations were melted.

There is no such thing as an earthquake proof house, and the newer ones actually suffer more damage than the old ones.
In Morgan Hill in the early ‘80s the most recently built homes were mostly completely destroyed because they were too rigid.
Old homes mostly had just superficial damage because they were more flexible.

Eh, well that is what concerns me—the house is not new—guessing from 70s based on what I have seen.
Problem is that it is in the hills—terraced up the hills are house upon house with retaining walls.
He is there because lives there almost rent-free—and in the Bay area, that is an amazing thing to pull off.

The safest housing in the Hayward area were built in the ‘20s and ‘30s.
They get lots of cracked plaster, but the building remains safe, and can be repaired at minimal cost.
The stuff built from ‘72 onward is way too rigid, and in a major quake will likely have the foundation destroyed because the frame of the building is rigid. (new and “improved”)

Not sure what was done to the house by the original owner (who still lives there) but supposedly they did some things to “earthquake proof” the house. I tend to agree with you that it likely will have major damage—I just hope he is OK if and when quake occurs. Probably better he be home tho than out—he has lots of prepping stuff—first aid, water, and food stored.
Local Reno news said that fire went from -0- to 80,000 acres in about 18 hours.
Not the fields-—but the buildings & storage & processing units.
That’s insane growth. I saw on the news a bit ago that it was somewhere around 115,000 acres now.
Found website with updates...all seem to be updated this morning for various areas acreage burned/contained, evacuation info, etc.

Are there really that many missing? I thought maybe they hadn’t been able to contact family yet, bad cell phone reception etc. If accurate, that’s just horrible.
I am praying for the Alexander Valley, Sonoma. The relatives have a deciduous forest abut the 110 acres of old vine zinfandel.

Seems many folks in NorCal have grape acreage. Hopefully their fields will be spared! A few posts up I posted a website that has updates for various locations...perhaps you can keep track of that location—not sure how often they are updated, but they all seemed to be this morning.

Work closed today, we were asked to go to various locations to help. I was cleaning tables and mopping floors and taking out garbage, and then the National Guard and Army rolled up. Although I am in good shape and did time as a janitor more than once, something about 50 or so in shape much younger guys make me feel OK about taking the rest of the afternoon off.
VERY heartening, college students, old folks any and everybody who can help doing anything they can.
I’ve always nicknamed Santa Rosa as God’s country. Spent many an hour looking at real estate listings for a small spread. I have spent many happy times camping high a top in the redwoods at nearby Guerneville and kayaking the Russian river, where is mixed with the redwoods are vineyards. So sorry to hear about that special community. The kids seemed like country kids to me, didn’t know what was down the road a bit and were kind of innocent of the world. But they knew their wine! Prayers up for a sweet patch of California.
