NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.

The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.

Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.

Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.

The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

gridlocked road.

They get gridlocked during tourist season...which I believe it still is with Columbus Day and all. Hotel rates go down in sometime November.

Sunday night 10 vehicles with evacuees were following a sheriff’s vehicle on a back road trying to leave the Atlas Peak fire.

They got caught due to trees and powerlines falling on the road.

A CHP helicopter and his co pilot in the dark of night started rescuing those people in the dark with trees and power lines around them.

They successfully rescued 40 people, 5 dogs and 1 cat.

The pilot was interviewed and made what he did sound like just a job. If he and his copilot had not rescued those people with that night rescue, those 40 people, 5 dogs and 1 cat would probably be dead.

Wow, thanks for sharing that story Grampa Dave. For me, it is stories like this—heroism of the First Responders, or just citizens helping others—that help me to follow what is a terrible situation, and I am shaking my head as I don’t see the fires lessening.

We had several friends in the Napa area, and we hoped/knew they were evacuated and didn’t hear from them until late yesterday. Everyone of those people voted for Trump.

There are 3 couples and 2 widows living in Silverado, and we have no info on them. Again, all of these people are/were Trump voters and long time real republicans.

In Santa Rosa/Sonoma, there are two 40 something women/sisters. They are like daughters/sisters. One has a couple of daughters and grandkids. One is an old fashioned Democrat, she voted for Trump instead of Clinton. The other is as conservative as we are. Again, we have not been able to contact them.

Yesterday, until about 2 pm, we couldn’t text or call friends and relatives with our cell phones, because of the high demand and loss of cell towers.

As noted yesterday, Santa Rosa and around the city of Sonoma look like Dresden after getting bombed in WWII. No one knows if people got caught in that inferno.

Know what? You make some excellent points.

I would say, at a time like this, political party affiliation should not be a criteria for concern.

no cell service, missing friends, threat to losing homes, just terrible and fires keep coming...inferno and Dresden are apt descriptions. Just heart breaking situation!

Keeping them in thoughts and prayers!

Winds expected to drive next wave of deadly California fires

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) — Gusting winds and dry air forecast for Thursday could drive the next wave of devastating wildfires that are already well on their way to becoming the deadliest and most destructive in California history.

Winds up to 45 mph (72 kph) were expected to pummel areas north of San Francisco where at least 23 people have died and at least 3,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed. The conditions could erase modest gains made by firefighters.

“It’s going to continue to get worse before it gets better,” state fire Chief Ken Pimlott said Wednesday.

The 22 fires, many out of control, spanned more than 265 square miles (686 square kilometers) as the inferno entered its fourth day. ercent.

Not hyperbole thiz time. Schools are closed through the bay area. It’s rare to have people die in urban/suburban fires. 25 dead and 250 plus missing. I used to live there. It’s only 3% contained with no rain until end of next week.

Puddles of boiling wine. So bizarre.

On the Phoenix radio news a fire official from California said it was going to be weeks before they will have the fires contained and under control. I hope he’s wrong. Weeks!!!

Two places to donate money to help the fire victims and all of your money will go to that effort!

The family that owns Hall’s Winery has started a matching fund drive to help the people in the fire areas needing financial aid. Every $ donated will be matched and will go to help those in need and not line some rich liberal so called charity’s pockets!

Many of the evacuees left their homes at night with minimal clothing and basically what money they might have had at home. Many will have no homes to return to and maybe no jobs to return to.

This fundraiser being hosted by a great family will help many in need now and later. They will match every $ donated up to $100,000! In less than 24 hours, they have raised: $38,849 raised of $100,000!

https://www.facebook.com/donate/492164871148956/";>

Below is the address for the Salvation Army in Napa, Ca.. 100% of what you donate will help pay for what the Salvation Army has done and will do!

Salvation Army, 590 Franklin St, Napa, CA 94559
