CBS SF Bay Area News ^ | 10/08/2017 | CBS Staff

NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.

The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.

Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.

Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.

The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

Don’t know about CA, but in Nebraska (yes, we actually produce wine here) the start-up cost for a vineyard is between $10-20,000 per acre, depending on the grape varietal, the trellis system, and type of irrigation you choose.

Thank you for the information. You have posted several things about vineyards. Seem very knowledgeable. Are you growing grapes?

Yes, and this president is the one who would not veto anti-abomination legislation. :)

Your answers to these nasty people have been very good. Thank you.

My son lives there (right downtown, but the fire line is still a couple of blocks away) and has been sending out pictures all day. His buddy, who lives in the north end of the city where the fire first hit, lost his house, his daughter lost her house and his mother lost her house as well. The guy had literally only the tee shirt and pants he was wearing, and it was so bad when he came into the bar where everybody was gathering that he just started laughing and laughing. He said he couldn’t believe that only about 4 hours earlier, he’d had a house, a truck, etc. - and now all he had was what he was wearing.

BTW, they scrounged up some beer promotional tee shirts left by distributors, so he’s now got a fine beer wardrobe.

Some Freepers do the same thing about states where we have liberal government or high taxes. Like it's the fault of conservatives who live and work there that we have liberals in our state.

And then they throw out the "You don't like it then move dickhead" comments.

Nice.

Yeah, that’s what I clicked, “watch live”. Nothing loaded on my system.

I read the warning before I clicked it and stopped. I'm on the Facebook link now (you do not have to be a Facebook subscriber to view).

I'm just saying, you sound just like that lawyer. Go ahead, deny it.

I wish I cared but I don’t... Sorry, but that’s how much I despise the state of California in general.

You are welcome...Just no excuse for this type of posting here—especially on this thread.

Glad your son is safe...Sorry about his friend’s and friend’s daughter’s house...

Was just talking to my spouse (who may be moving there temporarily for a job) and said I just can’t imagine what it would be like to get a knock on door in middle of night to immediately evacuate...and then lose everything...so many memories gone...wow. Glad your son is safe.

Hard lots of people out of power...

And to learn that the Kmart is burned down so cannot even go get some new cheap clothing...or eat at cheap Arbys...

Very sad...

Beer wardrobe huh? Well, that will be a tale to tell at holidays...

Thoughts and prayers up for your son and hhis friends and neighbors.

There are high heavily forested north-south ridges that separate the valleys in wine country. I believe most of the fires are in the hills below the ridges and on the ridges themselves. The fires generate strong uplift winds that carry the fire to the top. I don’t know how much danger the vineyards are in. The area covered by vineyards is immense!

Napa Valley AVA. 225,300 acres of land. Encompasses almost the entire county of Napa and is home to 400 wineries. Within that area, there are 45,000 acres of vineyards

The appellation of Sonoma County totals more than one million acres of land of which 60,000 acres area planted to winegrapes. The county includes 13 distinct AVAs as well as being a part of the North Coast AVA. The larger Sonoma Coast AVA has 517,000 acres. Sonoma County is 52 miles wide and 47 miles long and is currently home to 260 wineries.

Mendocino is an approved American Viticultural Area with 275,200 acres. The total area planted to vineyards is 16,700 acres.

The western portion of Lake County comprises the North Coast AVA. It encompasses the Clear Lake AVA, which in itself has 168,900 acres of land, the Red Hills Lake County AVA, and High Valley AVA. Within Lake County, a total of 8,530 acres are planted to winegrapes.

So, vineyard areas:
Napa - 45,000 acres
Sonoma - 60,000 acres
Mendocino - 17,000 acres
Lake - 9,000 acres

I am always concerned about terrorism with these kinds of fires..

Good point...Have not heard anything about that, but even if fires not started by terrorism, a terrorist could take advantage of first res ponders dealing with this situation...and start a problem elsewhere ;(

I agree with you! Also what is the ‘Fuel Source”,? Type of areas and accessibility to fight the fires? Are the homes in suburban or rural areas?
In some rural area, you are urge(forced) to provide a water supply (lake, river or pond)to provide fire protection. A reservoir is for the owners use and the Fire Dept., when they show! Years ago they showed plans for a sprinkler system(all metal) to place atop buildings. It specified using self contained gas powered pump.
The magazine “Progressive Farmer” has had articles/plans on self protection for rural areas for years.

My niece and her family were evacuated. They made it safely to a friends garage in town.

Prayers for all those effected by the fires.

It is my belief that the fires were caused by the high winds banging poiwer lines together creating sparks that werew carried by the wind, if not out right damaging the lines in some places.

I am here in Fresno working the Big Fresn Fair. My wife got the call to evacuate early this morning. I have been up since then trying to get here accurate information. SHe has no computer, no smart phone, etc...just a land line and sometimes TV>

We are effected by the LaPorteFire/CascadeFire here in Butte County. She did load up everything in our busvan and is waiting to see what shakes out. While re did get a mandatory evac, the winds died down or shifted so that the fire is mostly in Bangor and Rackerby in Butte and Loma Rica and Collins Lake in Yuba.

I think she is watching our neighbor across the street. He has a scanner and said he will give a call if things change. Early this monrning she could see the red skies from the Cherokee Fire as well as the La Porte Fire.

I had to laugh at my honey...I said maybe we should load up the new tent top we got this last fair and damned if she didn’t load it up. That top is worth 700 bucks 20x10 Celina Tent vinyl for those in the know. Our boys are waiting in standby (our two-headed turtle) Their food is loaded up and everything is ready to leave if needed. Just talked to her and even local news isn’t giving info...just concentrating on the Santa Rosa fires. Granted its bad, much like the Oakland fire back in 1990. But a little news from the locals about what we might be facing would be appreciated.
