McConnell Keeps 30-hour Debate Rule to Slow-Walk Senate Confirmations

Posted on 10/12/2017 1:34:28 AM PDT by cotton1706

There was much in the news yesterday about Mitch McConnell ditching the blue-slip procedure in the Senate.

But it's all smoke and mirrors

McConnell is trying to fool conservatives and halt the donor backlash.

Regarding blue-slips, McConnell will defer to Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, who will keep the blue-slip procedure (see story link below) so Mitch can say "wasn't me!"

However, McConnell will not get rid of the 30-hour cloture debate rule, which is the REAL cause of delay within the Senate.

From the Weekly Standard article (link below):

The so-called “30 hours rule”—which provides for 30 hours of debate on a nominee—won’t be overturned. But McConnell vowed to set aside time for these debates. And he can make this happen because he sets the Senate schedule.

So McConnell vows to ditch a tradition which is not within hi power (rests with Grassley, in committee) but will not ditch the 30-hour rule, which IS within his power.

Smoke and mirrors!

What have McConnell and Ryan EVER done for Americans?

NOTHING. Except make themselves richer and
make Pres. Trump weaker.

With recesses and other business, it would take beyond the November 2018 elections to clear the current backlog which, of course, will never happen. Mitch must go.

So how long will it take to get all the judicial vacancies filled at thirty hours apiece? Can it be done in one four term? I can't see the Democrats and most of the Republicans allowing less than 30 hours and those procedures won't be end to end, but interspersed with everything else the Senate does.

Thanks for connecting the dots. The liar media also jumped in to support McConnell and make him seem a hero to conservatism.

This man is a menace.

There are soon to be 166 vacancies. Two days for each one plus weekends, holidays, recesses and other business takes you well into 2019

So far the snake McConnell has only managed to have 7 of Trump’s judicial nominees confirmed and has a considerable BACKLOG of others awaiting confirmation. The duplicitous McConnell should be pressured into keeping the Senate in session 24/7. Yes, he could actually do that but will he? Not unless he wants to and he doesn’t appear to want to!

Remember when Harry Reid got over 80 judges confirmed in a couple of days in December of 2014? It can be done, IF there’s a will to do it.

But McConnell and his ilk in the Senate hate conservative victories. And Trump is sending the Senate conservatives only, not the usual moderate judges approved by democrats (which the Senate would confirm quickly, without any cloture delay).

This is all about delaying and preventing conservative jurisprudence.

He wouldn’t do the 24/7 thing. He’d conveniently have his three moderates claim to need to be in their home states for their niece’s piano recital, or cancer treatment, etc. There’s always another trick in the bag.

Which, of course, doesn’t even take into account the continuing opening up of new vacancies. Sitting judges will not take a hiatus in resignations, deaths, and retirements in that time.

ALL Senate rules must be removed or reformed for the good of the people, not the Senate. Expediency should be a primary factor.
