My cable bill is insane, I am very close to cutting it. The cable company wrings money out of me by claiming it won’t be any cheaper just to have internet alone w/o cable.
Look into streaming services like Play Station Vue, Sling, ETC.
I live about 60 miles from the nearest TV broadcast antenna and I'm tucked into a canyon and my antenna is on my patio roof and is pointed at my neighbor's fig tree. I get about 100 Digital broadcast stations with a $50 antenna.
I have Amazon Prime (I got that for the free shipping), Netflix and Hulu. Roku has about 1000 channels of free stuff. Tubi TV on Roku has all kinds of free movies and documentaries. I can also watch You Tube on my Roku.
Haven't missed my cable since I cut it. Reduced my entertainment bill by about $100 a month. I didn't watch most of the crap on Cable anyway. If there is a show that I could only get on Cable, I just wait until it is on Netflix or Hulu.
Cut the cable a year ago
Hulu - commercial free $12/month
Netflix - $8/month
DirectTV Now - $39/month
I have more shows than I have time for. All commercial-free. Over 100 channels including HBO, 20,000+ movies on demand for $60/month
I would probably cut the cord, but my husband wants to keep it. There are a few things we watch on cable, that we really enjoy, such as the DiscoveryID channel and college football. Why can’t we just choose which channels we want? Plus, we have the worse cable company in the nation, Mediacom, and I bet they get their contract renewed by the local pols next year. Grrrr!
I have internet only through the cable company for $52 a month. Cut the cable four years ago and don’t miss it. Can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a movie.
They have told me the same. Comcast.
Will you really be missing anything if you never watched another NFL game? Or, will you just be getting a lot of your life and free will back?
We have internet only. No landline, and no cable. It works.
I cut my cable in the late 80s. Smart TVs with streaming costs maybe 1/4 of what cable costs.
We get that line from the cable company too. They also hinted to us that "internet-only" customers get throttled back by implying that the internet would be faster with cable TV on top of it.
That has not been my experience at all since cutting the cable. The Internet is plenty fast enough and there is enough bandwidth in the house for several video streams at once.
For me, it's not about saving money, it's about not bringing that crap into the house and subsidizing networks such as CNN, MTV, ESPN, MSNBC, etc. I don't care if "internet-only" was double the price. I'd still cut the cable. I feel that strongly about it.
It's just the wife and I at home so this is how we do it. Our one TV set in the living room has a Roku box attached to it ($99 one time cost) from which we stream internet content to the TV. But we hardly use the TV. Mostly we stream over our laptops (MacBook Pros) and this provides stunning video quality. I stream Sirius/XM radio throughout the house on wireless speakers which has not only all the music you will ever need but FoxNews, sports and talk shows. So for breaking news, the occasional game and for say Hannity or Tucker at night, we are covered nicely. If we really wanted to, we could find a live FoxNews stream on YouTube.
We have Netflix and Amazon Prime which delivered hundreds of television shows, movies and documentaries with phenomenal video quality (over the Internet). We don't really care about the current season of a particular show or the fact that some shows and movies aren't available. There is more than enough content already that we would never be able to watch it all even if that's all we had to ever do.
So I don't miss cable TV at all. I used to miss watching NFL football (though I could always hear the game on Sirius/XM) and I would sometimes go to a local sports bar to see a game but now I don't even do that anymore given that the NFL has decided to give the finger to their fans by allowing their players to protest President Trump and America while on the field.
That all said, there are many Americans out there still scared to pull the cable TV plug. They have grown addicted to cable television. It's encouraging to see more and more of them taking the plunge and going cold turkey.
I have had no regrets.
You can have MORE content outside of cable for far less.
Netflix: $8/month
Hulu: $7/month
KlowdTV: $7/month.
Amazon Prime: Free with Amazon Prime membership.
There are many, many other providers for $3/-$10 month. Depending on what you like to watch determines which providers you choose.
Get an Amazon FireTV (has wired network cable and wireless)or FireStick (has only wireless network), or a Ruku device. (Prefer Amazon). They plug into an HDMI port on your TV.
All you then pay for is an Internet connection, and you only need a basic connection to make these devices work.
Cut cable, cut your costs and their liberal profits!
Fortunately, I live in a hilly area which I’m near the peak. I get all the major networks plus PBS and METV. Better quality than cable. Back when I was watching football, I would be able to get 2 different games on the same network because of the location of the town. Ah the good ole days, don’t really miss it.
