She’s had type one diabetes since she was a kid in the 1960s. That’s a really long time to live with that disease and, while diabetics live a lot longer than they used to, their life expectancy is still significantly shorter than the average and they tend to develop serious health issues at a younger age than usual.

I had a friend who was type-1...she died at 54 a few years back.
