My problem with that, for myself only, is that I do not miss the NFL. I was a long-time fan (Jets, with an interest in the Chiefs now that I live in the KC area). But, my interest has waned over the last few years due to mediocre games, plus the increasing thuggishness of the league.
Now that I have quit watching entirely - except for haunting threads like this one - I don’t miss it. It no longer matters to me.
My boycott is more of a growing up on my part - not to disparage anyone who feels otherwise. I speak only for little ol’ me.
there was a game last night?
I am in the same boat
But with Lurie allowing those 3 idiots to Black Power Salute
the Eagles have lost a fan since 1948
The Eagles made it to the Superbowl in 2004. They lost by a field goal to Bill Belechick. Terrell Owens played the game with a broken leg and was their best offensive weapon. Donovan McNabb vomited in a huddle close to the end of the game. This season I will forgive the Eagles a couple of fisters if they play as well as they can. The teams with mass kneelers are losers. The Eagles are winners. Been a fan for 62 years and, quite frankly, don’t care what the field hands do so long as they win or break their bones trying. Smoke pot, beat the snot out of the baby-mama, drive 140 on the Turnpike, get into a brawl in a strip club, raise your fist during pre-game festivities. Whatever. Of course I won’t buy from any NFL advertisers.
It is pretty shocking to take a couple of steps back and realize that we stare at a TV for 3 hours to see 11 minutes of play and over an hour of advertisements. Even the Hollywood singing by that long legged woman is just ridiculous. My liberal dad has long hated the NFL and prefers college primarily because of the thug aspect. I used to follow the Packers but even their season is over now.
I think MNF lost audience when the popular team of Gifford, Meredith and Cosell left the show (not all the same year). Many viewers never considered any of the successors as entertaining.
The current collective bargaining agreement ("CBA") expires after the 2019-2020 season. Negotiations on the new CBA will begin next year. The salary scale, salary caps, free agent compensation, and just about every other economic issue is tied to League and Team revenues, which are heavily tied to TV viewership and merchandise sales. One of the best ways for the owners to regain the upper hand and reduce the Union's bargaining power with respect to these core economic issues is to let the marque players, prima donnas, and thugs destroy their value as a player and weakend the Unions negotiating power. The risk is that the NFL will permanently lose its fan base in the process, but if the post strike years are any indication, the owners are probably betting that the fans will return after the owners retake control with the next CBA.
Yeah, you might have thought that people would tune in to see football, or something.
(But Cosell *was* a trip! Requiescat in pace....)
In the past I’d occasionally read the comments on Yahoo Sports as games were being played, both college and pro. It was surprising how many commenters had really strong likes and dislikes concerning the announcers and color commentators.
Among viewers who don’t have any strong identification with the two teams competing, the announcers could affect the size of the audience.
And now that the Gators suck, we’re going to be stuck with women announcing our games.
The Colts moved in 1984...
Neither the network nor the NFL will acknolwedge what the poor ratings mean. They’ll simply blame it on the teams that played. In other words, had the contest been between better teams, well then, ratings would be fine.
Anyone else notice that none of the networks broadcase the National Anthem any longer (for two weeks now).
I have looked to see if they do the Anthem.... the networks are just as bad for not showing the opening ceremonies which were always my favorite.
A pox on the teams and the networks.
Lol, the announcers don't usually affect me much one way or the other, but I would have to be very interested in a game to listen to most women announcers I've heard. Women already have most all the sideline commentator jobs, so why do they have to be put in the booth also?
Believe me, it sucked.
