The Self-Dealing Presidency of Donald Trump
New York Times ^ | October 19, 2017 | Times Editorial Board

Posted on 10/20/2017 10:48:27 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

If Donald Trump thinks there’s nothing wrong with exploiting the presidency for his personal profit, he should read the Constitution.

That’s the argument plaintiffs made in a Manhattan federal court on Wednesday, in the first-ever lawsuit to accuse a president of violating the emoluments clauses — once-obscure constitutional provisions that the nation’s founders adopted to prevent corruption of public officials.

The emoluments clauses are based on a simple, sound idea — that the nation’s security and well-being are threatened when those entrusted with acting in the public interest use their office for private gain. Until Jan. 20, there was no need to invoke them.

Even if the case is thrown out on those grounds, Mr. Trump is still a walking emoluments-clause violation. And he still refuses to release his tax returns and other financial records, preventing the public from seeing the full extent of his business entanglements, debts and interests.

In this light it’s hard to see how the American people can ever be confident that Mr. Trump, who has spent a lifetime as a money-obsessed deal maker, is acting in the nation’s best interest, and not his own.

exploiting the presidency for his personal profit,

Where's their editorial board denunciation of using the State Department for personal profit, i.e. Hillary?

To the dicks on the nyslimes board:

Who says President Trump is doing anything of the kind? He is already richer than God and doesn’t need any more wealth.

You are REALLY late worrying about this - where were you 1993-2001 and 2009-2017?? THAT is when the Presidency was up for sale or rent!

***WARNING***

NYT = Not Yielding to Truth

Don’t believe these Lying Leftist Media outlets that proved themselves during the 2016 campaign to be operatives of the DNC and intentional liars. They are presumed to be lying and we should presume what they publish is a lie. The presumption can only be rebutted with the outlet providing clear and convincing evidence they are not lying.

What good does it do to post this b/s from a known lying Leftist outlet other than demoralize the readers? If this story is true and has some redeeming value, at least get the story from a relatively reliable source, not from a known Lying Leftist operative posing as a “news” organization.

I understand that some posts of certain published lies can help in ferreting out the truth and can be very helpful. But much of the stream of almost endless Leftist media’s published lies posted on FR often has no redeeming value, gets people pissed off and possibly demoralized, and seems sometimes to even strengthen the lie.

stepping away from the day-to-day management of the Trump Organization even as he retains his ownership in it

So how exactly is this different than a blind trust?

CNN was on in the restaurant I was at yesterday with subtitles. The hysterical CNN venom directed at Trump just look so comical in printed words.

Yep, this piece was “in case of emergency, break glass”, ready to be published to distract from any disclosure of the swampy, self-dealing corruption of the media/uniparty axis, of which Uranium One is but one example.

I don't need to educate FReepers on this. But this is Classic of all media. Lead with a false premise and then make up the rest of the story as you go along. The trick is that Republicans are inclined to argue and debate the validity of the each ridiculous fabricated detail instead of dismissing the premise as ludicrous and calling the author by name for not being smarter than a 3rd grader.

Trump made a spectacle out of divorcing himself from his own enterprise during his presidency. I haven't seen any commercials or adds of Trump promoting his personal interests.

If he would have done a blind trust, they would have insisted he sell all his businesses for a loss. It would have made no difference. He did what he had to do for the American people.

exploiting the presidency for profit

,-—————————

The media can’t keep their propaganda straight

This week the fake story is Trump self dealing to enrich himself with the Presidency

Last week the media was gloating that President Trump has taken a 600 million dollar hit to his net worth to become President and dropped down the list of richest men in the world

The BS never ends

Trump is unusual in that he is NOT becoming wealthy by means of his political career. He was wealthy before running for office. He is wealthy in office. He will be wealthy after he leaves office.

By contrast, consider the Clintons and how they became wealthy...or any number of other politicians who did not come into politics wealthy, but left very wealthy.

How can anybody take the NYT seriously?

I agree COMPLETELY!

I have almost totally given up watching the "news", listening to "talk radio" and reading here at FR because it is ALL liberal talking points (lies) ALL THE TIME!!!

Seriously folks! QUIT giving liberal outlets free say here on a conservative forum!

Even if the case is thrown out on those grounds, Mr. Trump is still a walking emoluments-clause violation.

So, their theme is "let's hate Trump" no matter what happens.

New York Times is upset Trump is rich.

And the emoluments clause only prohibits a federal official from receiving anything of value from a foreign state.

Which Trump hasn’t violated.

the NYSlimes continues to live up to its name

anti-Trump
also
anti-Christian
anti-Jewish
anti-American

about all the paper is good for is its crossword puzzles and, I am told, sometimes (not always) its book and theatre reviews are ok. The paper should be shut down. And replaced with an entertainment-oriented webpage.

We’re treated to the spectacle of a wealthy corporation denouncing Trump for the crime of being wealthy.

And the NYT is a for profit corporation. The irony of their sanctimonious jeremiad to Trump doesn’t register with them.

Trump could give up all his wealth and potential conflicts of interests and they would still hate him.

Denouncing him for being motivated by personal gain is a phony argument and they know it.

“Forbes has released its 36th annual Forbes 400 list ranking the richest Americans, and U.S. President Donald Trump has moved down to number 248 after his wealth decreased by $600 million to $3.1 billion from 2016. Last year, Trump was ranked No. 156.”

Which is it - Trump isn’t as rich as he used to be or his wealth impedes his ability to be a responsible public servant?

The President drives the Left crazed with fear and they can’t settle on what their anti-Trump talking point is from one day to the next.
