Trump will allow release of classified JFK assassination files

President Trump said Saturday morning he will allow the release of the classified files related to former President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963.

"Subject to the receipt of further information, I will be allowing, as President, the long blocked and classified JFK FILES to be opened," Trump tweeted.

Trump's announcement counters a report that predicted the president was likely going to block the release of some of the documents by the National Archives, which citing pressure from the CIA over possibly harmful national security information being revealed.

Still, White House spokesperson Lindsay Walters told Politico Magazine that the Trump administratioin was trying "to ensure that the maximum amount of data can be released to the public.

The deadline for the National Archives to release the 3,100 documents, primarily from the CIA and FBI, is Oct. 26. The date was established by the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, which was signed into law by former President George H.W. Bush in an attempt to minimize conspiracy theories about Kennedy's death.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., led a group of bipartisan lawmakers urging Trump earlier this month to allow full access to the classified documents.

"Transparency in government is critical not only to ensuring accountability; it's also essential to understanding our nation's history," Grassley said in a statement. "The assassination of President Kennedy occurred at a pivotal time for our nation, and nearly 54 years later, we are still learning the details of how our government responded and what it may have known beforehand. Americans deserve a full picture of what happened that fateful day in November 1963. Shining a light on never-before-seen government records is essential to filling in these blank spaces in our history."

Lots of things have taken place since 1979.

Lt. Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa, who defected in 1978 from Romania has written several books on Soviet involvement with Oswald in general and the KGB in particular.

Many years ago there was an article in Hemmings Motor News about a retired mechanic who worked at the US Gov't Inter-agency Motor Pool at the garage in DC. He said he recalled this car was involved in an accident that caused minor front end damage some time before it was sent to Dallas, but there was no accident report filed. A typical gov't oversight?

Or maybe he thought all the Castro’s would be dead and gone and their government fallen. I could see a scenario where Castro was behind this. Because Russia was complicit, the US didn’t want to look weak by not responding in the face of an overt act of war.

A bunch of confusion and blaming civil rights gobbledegook was the perfect excuse for doing nothing in response to Cuba’s actions...which could have kicked off an even bigger war with Russia.

I agree with you. I think that the files will not show any pertinent details of the assassination. Instead, a careful reading of these files will show the coverup activity.

The people managing the investigation believed that the evidence would point back to either Castro or Russia. The SWAMP of that era did not want either of these results. Thus, they probably stymied the investigation itself in order to guarantee that no evidence would be found.

There had to be "no evidence found" since they could not depend on a fully compliant FBI to suppress uncovered information.

The papers being released will, at best, show the efforts expended to suppress information and dry up leads without proper follow up. An analysis today of those papers is going to be pretty dry and is not likely to result in anything which can be turned into a good movie.

We may never know what a proper investigation would have revealed. We may only be able to ascertain what scared the handlers at the time and they were probably only guessing.

Wait until the documents are released and you will see that according to Dr. Michael Baden, who was on the U.S. Congress Select Committee investigating the JFK Assassination, two of three projectiles fired from the Sixth Floor School Book Depository were responsible for the death of the President. That is where Oswald was.

The fact that the FBI agent assigned to Oswald didn't know where he was working so the Secret Service could be notified is a real problem, not CIA misinformation.
