Brother to Brother
October 23, 2017
A new command I give you: Love one another.
John 13:34
My brother and I, less than a year apart in age, were quite competitive growing up (translation: we fought!). Dad understood. He had brothers. Mom? Not so much.
Our story could have fit in the book of Genesis, which might well be subtitled A Brief History of Sibling Rivalry. Cain and Abel (Gen. 4); Isaac and Ishmael (21:810); Joseph and everyone not named Benjamin (ch. 37). But for brother-to-brother animosity, its hard to beat Jacob and Esau.
Esaus twin brother had cheated him twice, so he wanted to kill Jacob (27:41). Decades later Jacob and Esau would reconcile (ch. 33). But the rivalry continued on in their descendants, who became the nations of Edom and Israel. When the people of Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land, Edom met them with threats and an army (Num. 20:1421). Much later, as Jerusalems citizens fled invading forces, Edom slaughtered the refugees (Obad. 1:1014).
Happily for us, the Bible contains not just the sad account of our brokenness but the story of Gods redemption as well. Jesus changed everything, telling His disciples, A new command I give you: Love one another (John 13:34). Then He showed us what that means by dying for us.
As my brother and I got older, we became close. Thats the thing with God. When we respond to the forgiveness He offers, His grace can transform our sibling rivalries into brotherly love.
Lord, we invite You to transform our relationships with Your healing love.
Sibling rivalry is natural. Gods love is supernatural.
Over twenty one another statements in the New Testament call us to focus on the needs of others. We are challenged to love, pray for, serve, comfort, and forgive one another.
This week, will you watch for ways to extend love and grace to others through His Spirit?

We had Scout Dogs with our Marine infantry units in 1966-7. They were very large, ferocious animals, trained to sense the enemy under the control of a single handler. If that handler was wounded or killed, we had instructions to shoot that dog immediately or it would turn on us.
I owe my life to one of those dogs. We were stopped for the evening at a deserted village and I had radio watch for the three radio nets: company command, platoon security and Conduct of Fires, and the radios hissed while I listened to the three handsets. In the total dark, an infiltrator approached me and the sound of my radios and even though I sensed somebody was near, I couldn't see a thing.
Suddenly I heard a shot, .45 go off and I saw the flash to my right. I asked "who shot?" and I heard "Dog Handler". I asked "why and he said "Dog saw something; I pointed the .45 in the direction he was looking and fired".
I stayed awake all night and when it got light I saw a man dressed only in black shorts lying on his back with a submachinegun hanging from a boot lace around his neck and the top of his head was gone. The dog handler's shot hit him in the side of his head while he was just a couple of yards away from me.

I envy your memory, I’ve rubbed most of what happened in Vietnam out of my memory banks, and I wasn’t out in the bush like you.

Howdy, Kathy.
Bummer y’all have snow on the ground. And the streets melted off just enough today to make them slick as heck overnight. Gonna be an adventure going to work in the morning, isn’t it? :-(
Did you have a nice weekend? Get in a little relaxation for a change or did you have a lot of projects on your “to-do” list?

Yes...I went by motorcycle ( a little chilly but not freezing cold) and sang three songs...My Van Morisson medley (Wild Night/Domino) with lots of vocal improv, and “Say you Love me” by Fleetwood Mac. Small but appreciative crowd.
Today Penny, another sister, and I hiked the pond. The fall colors were spectacular!

It affects everyone in different ways. In my case I remember almost everything as if it was just last week.
Not always a good thing.

Well, thanks.
It was a long time ago but some things always stay close to you. I sometimes wish I could be back there with all my friends.
Someday soon, I guess I will be with them again.

Howdy, PRO.
Had a good weekend? Still fairly comfy up there or has cold weather returned?
Still warm here but that’s getting ready to change in a couple of days.
At least the weather was nice yesterday for our trip to Tupelo to bring back more items for the military museum close by. It was a LOOOOOOOONG day but OMG, what a fabulous collection that fella has!!! It’s massive and will take some time to get everything up here.
