As I contemplate the Trump presidency, I cannot help but think of Joseph Welch.
On June 9, 1954, during the Army-McCarthy hearings, Welch, who was the chief counsel for the Army, famously asked the committee chairman if he might speak on a point of personal privilege. After asking Sen. Joseph McCarthy for his attention and telling him to listen with both ears, Welch spoke:
Until this moment, senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty, or your recklessness.
And then, in words that today echo from his time to ours, Welch delivered the coup de grace: Youve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?
How many more disgraceful public feuds with Gold Star families can we witness in silence before we ourselves are disgraced?
How many more times will we see moral ambiguity in the face of shocking bigotry and shrug it off?
How many more childish insults do we need to see hurled at a hostile foreign power before we acknowledge the senseless danger of it?
How much more damage to our democracy and to the institutions of American liberty do we need to witness in silence before we count ourselves as complicit in that damage?
Nine months of this administration is enough for us to stop pretending that this is somehow normal, and that we are on the verge of some sort of pivot to governing, to stability. Nine months is more than enough for us to say, loudly and clearly: Enough.

I didn’t see anybody crying when he announced he was leaving...................
I cried .... tears of joy!
No Sen. Flake, It’s time to stand up WITH Trump!
Flake being a pearl clutched to the end.
Bye, Jeff. Don’t go away mad, just go away.
If I recall, McCarthy was correct and hounded for speaking the truth.
Flake: ‘Enough. It’s time to stand up to Trump.’
Flake: Oh, and I quit, because I’d lose.
I love it when a senator lives up to the family name.
Wasn’t McCarthy proven right in the end? At least partially? Is this really a great example for Flake to use?
These people say the most absolutely crazy things imaginable. He quit his race and he’s lecturing people to stand up to Trump. The people in his State don’t want to stand up to Trump they elected Trump.
Why do my senses tell me that Clinton Foundation & Global funding sources are motivating this Flake?!
Is becoming a weak-kneed, belly aching , neutered “man” , the new norm for folks like McCain, Flake and Corker?
What is with the mormons hatred of Trump?
Its time to start? When did everyone stop?
The Man With No Future is getting pretty brave while having his tail between his legs.
This guy is really ridiculous complaining about the gold star families when in both cases they were used by the Democrats to attack Trump in this latest instance he gave a widow a condolence call for which he’s being attacked.
it is sure a good thing he’s OUT!
some folks knew how bad he was at representing us voters but
he was generally sort of low-profile most of the time so that many people didn’t know about the Flake problem
now he’s OUTED himself for all to see, even the many who do not follow politics all the time
as my neighbor says, “Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish!”
Arizona currently has the two worst Senators in the entire history of the United States.
“I’m so mad about it I’m going to...I’m going to....grrrr...oh, I QUIT!!”
Ho hum.
“...Its time we all say: Enough.”
Actually, Senator flakey, the voters have said exactly that to you.
