Nationhood and autonomy are issues that transcend north-east Spain, with others wanting to redraw the map of Europe.
(A list of regions in Europe that are pining for some level of independence, and a presentation of their grievances and prospects)
(This is one of the major reason why most national governments of Europe back Spain in its fight with Catalonia - they don't want to be put in the same situation. If Catalonia wins, it will only embolden all these independence movements.)
Bornholm? You gotta be kidding me.
South Tyrol I understand. Brittany I understand. Corsica, yeah. But Bornholm????
FU EU ping.
Might be time to start repairing those castles....

Should this article be titled “Beyond Brexit”? Perhaps Great Britain’s withdrawal from the EU emboldened Catalonia.
I remember an analysis, I don’t know by whom, that when people lose faith in major institutions whether faith or transnational groups, they revert to nationalism, tribalism.
The average Quebec independence movement supporter was 20s-40s and a former devout Catholic. Nationalism replaced faith but let them keep their “tribe”.
We could be seeing the same thing in the EU, the dual rejection of the unelected elite and return to nationalism as one’s identity.
What about Grand Fenwick? With all the attention on Catalonia, it might be a good time for them to make their break for independence.
Those Bornholm radical secessionists are pretty impressive what with all their round churches, aren’t they?

You’re overlooking the pear farmers of Genovia who are demanding that Anne Hathaway return to her post as their queen.
The disintegration of the large nation states was predicted in the book The Sovereign Individual by Davidson and Rees-Mogg. It’s a fascinating trip through the history of political organization, technology, and the use of force. Could be we will see other kinds of political entities emerge such as march regions and city-states. We are in for some interesting times.
How many of these independence movements are the result of socialist agitators and not people yearning to escape to freedom from the socialists they are saddled with now?
How do all of these proposed balkanized baronies intend to hold back a Russian wave or was not resisting really the plan all along?
I hope that they arent planning for us to save them...again. I think the average American is too poor and too weary of our own problems to do it a third time.
What I never see mentioned about this uprising, the “Independence” of Catalonia is the Muslim connection.
Here’s a link to an article that explains in my mind the what’s behind it all.

I wasn’t aware that they had such a strong presence.
Did a search on “Catalonia Islam” and found quite a few articles.
I just posted one in FR.

Thanks for the pointed that out. I’m not sure that they’re the primary force behind the independence movement (Catalonia has been after that for centuries), but I’m sure they’re salivating at the prospect.
Thanks for your response.
I’m certain the Muslim’s remained active after losing Catalonia as their administration of the World is decreed by Islam.
