Great story. I've changed some minds myself with a .22 rifle. "But this is fun," is the usual comment from someone who thought it was some sort of atavistic ritual.

He purchased the weapon of choice of the most violent drug dealers, a .22 rifle. I say this jokingly...

Yep. The Ruger 10/22 is a well-known gateway gun. Let one of those into your life and pretty soon you're checking out the Barretts to see if they'll fit into your trunk. Seen it happen...

I got my first 22 when I was 6–a nice Sears and Roebuck bolt-action single shot with a bull barrel. Had it until I joined the service. Must have put a million rounds through it over the years at >$5 a brick. The 10/22 is simply the best household rifle in history and that was the first gun I bought, but that old single shot holds a special place.

Even took it to school to learn about gun safety for getting a hunting license. I remember thinking it was ridiculous to teach a gun safety course to a 12 year-old. Who could imagine a boy who didn’t know how to handle a gun by age? Sometimes I think we grew up on a different planet!
