The Surprising Revolt at the Most Liberal College in the Country (Reed College)
The Atlantic ^ | November 2, 2017 | Chris Bodenner

Posted on 11/03/2017 8:51:42 AM PDT by EveningStar

At Reed College, a small liberal-arts school in Portland, Oregon, a 39-year-old Saturday Night Live skit recently caused an uproar over cultural appropriation. In the classic Steve Martin skit, he performs a goofy song, “King Tut,” meant to satirize a Tutankhamun exhibit touring the U.S. and to criticize the commercialization of Egyptian culture. You could say that his critique is weak; that his humor is lame; that his dance moves are unintentionally offensive or downright racist. All of that, and more, was debated in a humanities course at Reed.

But many students found the video so egregious that they opposed its very presence in class. “That’s like somebody … making a song just littered with the n-word everywhere,” a member of Reedies Against Racism (RAR) told the student newspaper when asked about Martin’s performance. She told me more: The Egyptian garb of the backup dancers and singers—many of whom are African American—“is racist as well. The gold face of the saxophone dancer leaving its tomb is an exhibition of blackface.”

Apparently, you need to put a trigger warning on that link, my friend.

I remember seeing that on SNL. So funny !!! ... wished to see it again but back then there was no internet, no youtube, etc. You had to wait for the show pop up in reruns to see it again.

What, exactly, is surprising about Liberal snowflakes getting their panties in a knot over, well, just about anything and everything?

Unless I’m missing something, The Atlantic simply doesn’t get it on a very fundamental part of the modern scene.

I feel sorry for Millennials. Unable to enjoy silly comedy simply as silly comedy. Unable to sit back, relax, have a good laugh without judging.

I saw Steve Martin’s “King Tut” tour at the Universal Amphitheater in the late ‘70s with the Blues Brothers as the opening act. Great show.

The hyper-offended leftist victim-mongers of the 21st century would have been aghast at not only the King Tut part of the show, but would’ve no doubt hysterically accused John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd of “cultural appropriation of African-American bluesmen.”

I wonder how the class would have reacted to this SNL skit:

It isn’t offensive to liberals if blacks do it. They cannot be held to the same standards as whites.

Upon hearing of the snowflakes being offended by his “King Tut” video Steve Martin replied...

“WELL EXCUUUUUUUUSE ME!!!”

“Walk Like an Egyptian” was a big hit a while back. I guess it would be panned, or banned, in today’s climate.

I actually read most of the article. If I didn’t know it was real I would swear it was a satirical piece written by someone on LSD.

These people are certifiable.

Your right especially with John Belushi whom I consider a very talented & extremely funny man. Especially with John’s Samurai Hotel or Deli for making fun of Japanese & John’s impression of Joe Cocker singing “With a little help from my friends” making fun of a disability.

If these brain dead kids were alive back then we would not have many great comedians because they are not sensitive.
