“Get Real” is a a comprehensive sexual education program developed in Massachusetts by Planned Parenthood, and it's one program being considered by Spokane Public Schools for its new sexual education curriculum.
SPS' Human Growth and Development Citizen Advisory Committee (HGD CAC) has been considering the program for ab out a year. They have approved it twice.
A 2014 study in the Journal for School Health noted success for the program in its first three years. 'Get Real' reduced sexual activity by 15 percent for girls and 16 percent for boys, compared to students who were not exposed to the curriculum.
The program has received support here in Spokane. (The Pacific Northwest Inlander article linked in this sentence details that support.)
But- the program's association with Planned Parenthood- is a deal breaker for some members of the Spokane community.
“Spokane, you know, we are a wonderful community that is very family oriented, we need to do it in a way that actually teaches to who this community is,” said Joanna Hyatt.
Hyatt has two young children who will one day attend Spokane public schools. Her father, John Repsold, is a pastor at Mosaic in downtown Spokane. He's also the vice chair of the HGD CAC
They're not at all opposed to comprehensive sex education- Hyatt is a former sex educator herself. What they oppose it the way the program presents information to students- including abstinence, STI prevention, condom usage and sexual decision making.
They said they feel the program would “sexualize” students- so they have proposed changes.

The curriculum, titled Get Real, teaches children about LGBTQ issues and terminology, and meets the state of Washington’s new sex education requirements. The program was developed by Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts (PPLM) and published by ETR.
Get Real is a Comprehensive Sex Education (CSE) program that assumes young people will be sexually active.
In Grade 6, the Get Real curriculum says it introduces students to the “key Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills” they will supposedly need to be able to discuss sexual relationships and how to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
According to the program’s table of contents, in Grade 7, students also discuss sexual identity and “examine the myths and facts about sexual orientation.” They also learn how to use a condom and review the use of hormonal contraception, including emergency contraception after sexual intercourse.
In Grade 8, one of the Get Real activities is a presentation by someone who is living with HIV, and students are asked to write a thank-you letter to the speaker.
Pro-life organization Live Action also produced a video in 2014 that highlights Planned Parenthood’s normalization of Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism (BDSM) for young people.

“Bumper sticker” messages created by eighth-grade students as their capstone project give a grim glimpse into the damage done after three years of exposure to Get Real. Here are a few of the slogans designed by 14-year olds:
• “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning. Get Real and Get Over It.”
• “Got Consent?”
• “Male plus Female equal Love.Female plus Female equal Love.Male plus Male equal Love.”
• “Stay True to Yourself ” with “lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, question” in small print across the background.
• “Instead of spreading diseases spread the WORD. Keep the world safe. Use protections.”
