Plastic sucks.

Halon/chemical is questionable.

My real world experience favors large CO2 extinguishers.

It’s hard (for me) to even imagine 40 million *anything* being recalled, manufactured, shipped, anything.

Units made since.... 1973!!! Can one imagine how many of those would still be in service. This is government abuse— for the result of ... 1 (ONE) proven causative death from failure. Seriously. Nuts.

44 YEARs worth of the models. Wonder which competitor engineered this?

Well, on the smoke alarm side, it seems that Kidde has basically bought up all their competitors. I was in Home Depot the other day and Kidde smoke alarms were the only ones on the shelf. By the way, I've had endless problems with their smoke alarms... after about a year or so of use, the units start chirping as if the battery has gone low but it won't stop even with a new battery replacement. This has happened with three replacements of the alarm now.....

There are other fire alarms— much better. Course Home Depart doesn’t stock any but the cheapest, subject to misfunction.

As to the extiguishers— the marine model they make works fine, plastic handle and all. This is a mega-company and this is Consumer Product Safety folks. Again, the citation is based on one proven failure causing a death.

Where’s Ralph Nader— must be in a nursing home.

Thanks. Had a small kitchen fire last week. One fire extinguisher didn’t do anything, the other seemed to feed the fire. I’ll check the numbers.

Models? We need to replace ours as they have been nothing but an irritation. They are First Alert/BRK models. To be fair, we have a tendency to run fans to cool of the house and have indoor cats, so I am not sure how much of this is our fault.

Thanks for the heads up. I have eleven of them on the list. I’m feeling a bit peeved right now. I take fire safety seriously. The only ones not recalled so far are the automotive.

I have two. One in the kitchen, one in the vehicle. Both are recalled. I bought them both in 2004 when we moved into the new house. Sent the others to the fire department for disposal. I’ve never needed to use one. I don’t even think I’d be able to read the directions while trying to put out a fire. This is good because now I know what to do in case of emergency. I read everything.
