Republican Ed Gillespie: A Reagan conservative tries to appeal and prevail in the age of Trump
Richmond Times-Dispatch ^ | 11/4/2017 | Patrick Wilson

Posted on 11/06/2017 9:03:06 AM PST by leaymane

When he was attending Catholic University of America, Ed Gillespie worked three jobs, one in a campus dining hall, one as a short-order cook and one parking cars at the U.S. Senate.

Through the job as a parking lot attendant, Gillespie learned of an internship opportunity that led to a job on Capitol Hill, and he has not stopped working in politics and public affairs since.

Gillespie, communications ace, former lobbyist and senior aide to President George W. Bush, will find out Tuesday if Virginia voters will send a Reagan conservative to the Virginia governor’s mansion in the era of Donald Trump.

Should Gillespie succeed, he would become the first Republican elected statewide in Virginia since Bob McDonnell led his party’s sweep of statewide offices in 2009. He would likely have a GOP-controlled legislature to pass a broad agenda of bills he could sign into law.

“Job creation, getting Virginia growing again, is central to my campaign,” Gillespie said in an interview Thursday. “I truly think we should be first in the country. ... I’ve been talking about this from day one.”

The race between Gillespie and Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is considered close. Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by 5.3 percentage points in Virginia in November, but with lower turnout expected in this year’s governor’s race, Gillespie has given hope to Republicans.

This is Gillespie’s second run for statewide office in Virginia, after narrowly losing to U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., in a low turnout 2014 election.

Gillespie is NOT a Reagan Conservative. He’s a squishy Bush moderate. I’m voting for him only because his opponent is so loathsome.

The Republican candidate isn’t perfect so by all means, let’s let a communist be elected instead!

¨Yea, depress the GOP voters by saying he isn’t a Trump Republican!¨
Exactly.

“The person who agrees with you 80 percent of the time is a friend and an ally - not a 20 percent traitor.” - President Ronald Reagan

1. I agree that voting for Gillespie is a must for conservatives.
2. With regards to Reagan's quote, there has to be a additional factor apply; specifically, if I agree with someone on 99% of the issues, but that 1% is/are issue(s) that will kill my country, then I cannot support that person or call him a friend and ally. Amnesty is such an issue.

Is RINO wrapped in the cloak of nationalism still a RINO?

I’m going to hold my nose for him, I might not even need the two shots I had to imbibe to vote for Romney, the chameleon Republican.

Gillespie is a weasel.
Weasels are better than jackals, but we need to do much better than this.
Gillespie and his friends are the reason Virginia has turned blue and is overrun with illegal aliens.

I didn't say don't vote for him, it is the article making it an issue about Trump!

They want to make sure that Trump voters don't turn out to vote by talking about being a 'Reagan' conservative instead of a Trump one.

Yup and here I thought we were supposed to drain the swamp. He adds to that stock. If I were in the state I’d be sitting out the election. Voting for the D or R in this instance would have the same effect

Truth be told, Trump is closer to a Reagan Republican than any of the Bush clan or their open borders lackeys.

They do not want us to send home the 30 million people they invited here.
That would reverse their 30 year bipartisan policy of non-enforcement to change the country.
The real legacy that GHW Bush and W are most proud of is making the United States a Spanish speaking country.

Not a Reaganite and not a Conservative. His value is only in that he would defeat the Democrat.

Q : In Virginia how do you know when a true conservative Republican is running?

A : That's when the RINOs put up a "libertarian" third party "insurgent" to siphon off two or three percent from the tin foil "libertarian" true believers.
